Cinco de Mayo Block Party to Take Over South 9th Street With Food, Music, and Cultural Celebration
South Philadelphia’s vibrant 9th Street corridor will come alive with culture, flavor, and community as the first-ever Cinco de Mayo Block Party on 9th Street takes place on Saturday, May 9 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Stretching between Federal Street and Washington Avenue, the event is a grassroots celebration organized entirely by local business owners, with support from the city’s Office of Latino Engagement. The block will be closed to traffic and transformed into an open-air festival filled with food vendors, live entertainment, and cultural pride.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, and holds deep significance for the 9th Street community—many of whom trace their roots back to Puebla, Mexico.
This event is more than a party—it’s a reflection of the neighborhood’s identity, history, and the entrepreneurial spirit of the local businesses that power the corridor.
Festivalgoers can expect a wide range of authentic and regional dishes from some of South Philly’s most beloved spots:
- Adelita Taqueria – serving Mexico City-style micheladas and tacos
- Mole Poblano – offering traditional Pueblan cuisine
- Picositos – known for flavorful carnitas tacos
- Arepas Grub Hub – bringing Venezuelan flavors into the mix
- South Philly Barbacoa – featuring dishes from James Beard Award-winning Chef Cristina Martinez
- B & J Estampados – offering traditional Mexican apparel and merchandise
Each participating business will host its own entertainment, creating a dynamic, multi-sensory experience throughout the block. Expect live music, including mariachi-style performers, along with outdoor seating, pop-up vendors, and a festive atmosphere from end to end.
