Center City’s Open Streets: West Walnut Returns This Fall With Street Performers, Live Music, and Eagles Game Watch Zone
Center City District is bringing back one of its most popular programs this fall: Open Streets: West Walnut. Now in its second year, the pedestrian-focused event series is expanding, running for six Sundays from September 7 through October 12 — a nod to the program’s successful first season that drew thousands to the heart of Rittenhouse.
Since its debut in September 2024, Open Streets has transformed Walnut Street from 17th to 19th and 18th Street from Chestnut to Locust into a car-free corridor filled with outdoor dining, shopping, music, and community vibes. Over 115,000 people took part in the first three rounds of the series, helping boost foot traffic — and sales — for restaurants and retailers in the area.
The numbers speak for themselves. Nearly 90% of businesses surveyed reported an increase in visitors, with some seeing Sunday foot traffic triple. By April 2025, pedestrian counts were up 20% compared to the previous year, and the buzz didn’t stop there. June 2025 saw Open Streets expand into Midtown Village, again driving up visits and earning praise from Philadelphia Magazine, which dubbed it “a pedestrian’s dream.”
This fall’s edition brings back everything people loved — and then some. Streets will close from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with set-up starting at 7 a.m.), stretching Walnut Street from 15th to 19th and 18th Street from Locust to Chestnut. While cars are kept out, the streets will be full of life.
Expect street performers, bubble artists, live music, and a family-friendly zone with games and activities. Seating areas will be sprinkled along the route, giving visitors spots to relax, eat, or catch a live Eagles game being broadcast on select Sundays.
Food and drinks will be served exclusively by participating restaurants, many of which will extend their outdoor setups. While you can’t walk around with alcohol, plenty of dining spots will offer special menus and sidewalk service — some even planning exclusive deals and discounts.
Importantly, this isn’t a street fair with pop-up vendors. The focus remains on supporting the local businesses that call West Walnut home, and visitors are encouraged to explore and shop the entire neighborhood.
Produced by Center City District in collaboration with the City of Philadelphia and Rittenhouse Row, Open Streets: West Walnut is a celebration of shared space, local pride, and the simple joy of walking down the middle of the street.
