Calling All Knitters and Crocheters of Every Skill Level: The Free Library Is Hosting a Knit and Crochet-a-Thon to Support Those in Need
The Free Library of Philadelphia invites the community to come together for a day of creativity, compassion, and cozy crafting at the Knit and Crochet-a-thon for those in need, taking place Saturday, December 13, at 1:00 p.m. in the Art Department of the Parkway Central Library (1901 Vine Street).
This annual event transforms the library’s Art & Literature Department into a welcoming, hands-on volunteer space where participants knit and crochet warm winter items for Philadelphians in need. Crafters of all skill levels—beginners, hobbyists, and seasoned pros—are encouraged to drop in anytime throughout the afternoon to help make scarves, hats, and other cold-weather essentials.
All completed items will be donated through the Free Library Social Work team, who work directly with vulnerable and unhoused residents throughout the city.
During the Knit and Crochet-a-thon, guests are invited to stay for an hour or spend the whole afternoon stitching alongside fellow volunteers in a warm, collaborative environment. The library will provide:
-
Simple knitting and crochet patterns
-
Knitting needles and crochet hooks
-
A selection of yarn for shared use
Participants are also welcome to bring their own yarn, tools, or already-completed items to donate.
Last year’s event yielded 112 handmade items—a remarkable show of community generosity. This year, organizers hope to surpass that number with the help of returning volunteers and newcomers alike.
“Every scarf and hat makes a real difference to someone who needs it,” organizers shared. “This event brings together creativity, kindness, and community—and we’re excited to see how much we can accomplish together this year.”
No registration is required—simply arrive ready to craft and contribute.
