The Best Cheesesteak in Pennsylvania is in Pittsburgh? Wait, What?!
The Best Cheesesteak in Pennsylvania is in Pittsburgh? Wait, What?!
Usually I chalk best food lists up to personal preference. Sure we here at Wooder Ice have dished out some great top food lists but without tooting our horn, we are usually spot on. Obviously there are plenty of other top food lists that other sites have posted that have been pretty solid as well. However, a recent list of the best cheesesteaks in Pennsylvania was published by USA Today and has been making its rounds and sending shockwaves through the Philadelphia foodie community.
This is the like the equivalent of the NBA giving the 2001 MVP award to Christian Laettner over A.I. Like what? How? Who’s judging? The controversial winner, The Goove Cheesesteak Co. in Pittsburgh beat out all of the big dogs including Phillip’s, Steve’s, Pat’ & Delassandro’s. Tony Luke’s, Gooey Looie’s and Geno’s didn’t even crack the top 10!
After checking out The Groove’s website, we found some shocking no-no’s when it comes to crafting authentic cheesesteaks. First off there is no option for American cheese (I am a provy guy so I am not too salty about this). However, serving steaks with ranch, remoulade, chipotle mayo or honey mustard should’ve been an instant disqualification.
Although, USA Today published the contest, this cheesesteak fiasco can be blamed on Sandwich America which picked the panel of judges. We’re not too sure how they were able to find people born without taste buds but Sandwich America found a way. I am pretty sure these are the same folks that went crazy when McDonald’s experimented with the cheesesteak back in the day. I mean just look at the picture of their steaks, it’s like something you see in a hipster coffee shop in San Diego under a cute name like “Cali-Sunset Steak.” Anyhow, in case you were wondering here is the list of the “best cheesesteaks in Pennsylvania.”
