When traveling in and around Center City and the more affluent neighborhoods in Philly, you’re likely to spot some vegan and vegetarian restaurants as well as fresh produce stands. However, the healthy food options significantly dwindle as you travel to the more disenfranchised areas of Philly. However, one GoFundMe campaign is looking to help balance the disparity. The Rebel Market Capital Campaign is looking to raise $25,000 to help build Philadelphia’s first youth-powered and fresh food-filled corner store.
The campaign was created by Rebel Ventures which is an 501(c)3 PA nonprofit corporation that sparks youth in leadership and entrepreneurship by developing and distributing products (healthy deliciousness) directly with and for kids in our community. The Rebel Market would be something that is a long time coming and a far cry from the current corner store scenes where sugary snacks and high-sodium foods are being peddled to the youth.
Rebel organizers cited that the idea for the market was sparked when Zanayja, a 10th grader at Academy at Palumbo and Rebel Ventures entrepreneur, asked this question during a crew meeting : “Why can I buy four bags of chips at the corner store for $1, but one smoothie at the supermarket costs $4?” From that simple question the plan was set in motion to build a healthy corner store where young people control what’s on the menu and gain life skills by running the business.
Rebel Ventures emphasized that this initiative is not for profit profit but rather a movement to provide affordable, nutritious foods to their target customers (kids in Philadelphia) and entrepreneurial education to our high school crew. The Rebel Market will sell fresh sliced ‘grab and go’ produce, parfaits, smoothies, Rebel Crumbles, and other healthy snacks, many priced at $1 or less.
It all sounds like a dream scenario but Rebel is looking to turn this dream into a reality with your support. The campaign is currently well shy of its $25,00 goal but are confident that the Rebel Market will be up and running and serving healthy foods to the community that needs it.
