Born from an idea that comfort, quirk, and charm can be the cornerstones of a welcoming, inclusive, and safe space for people to work and play, the concept of Sunday Girl was created by Becca Grites, a local entrepreneur who will be opening her “fresh take on your typical coffee bar” café and coworking space at 263 N. 3rd Street (the corner of 3rd and Vine) in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood.

Sunday Girl will be a community cafe with specialty coffee drinks and light food items, as well as a place for the community to come together. “I want this place to be the most joyous place to work, grab coffee, eat local, and meet new friends in Philadelphia,” said Grites.

While she is eying a March opening, Grites will be hosting a “Sip’n’See” sneak peek preview party on Saturday, February 24th from 6 to 8 p.m. with bites, beverages, local artisans, limited edition Sunday Girl gear, and special introduction rates for the Sunday Girl coLAB — an intimate, membership-based coworking space in a separate room from the main café intended for independent workers, artists, and creatives who need an office space for a day, month, or an indefinite period of time.

“The coLAB is intended to be a quiet and dedicated workspace, as it will exist to inspire collaboration among members, forging new opportunities together,” said Grites.

Daily memberships come with a complimentary drink of choice for the day, while monthly memberships come with a monthly discount on drinks every day of that month. The cafe will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

“Sunday Girl embodies a home-away-from-home in the heart of the city,” said Grites. “Having managed and worked in small-sized establishments, I know from experience that the person behind the bar sets the tone for making a new place into a new favorite place. I always love working Sunday shifts; it’s typically a sleepier pace, with a mood that begs for soul music, and offers a real ability to get to know, communicate, and make connections with guests. I’ve always relished being any bar’s ‘Sunday Girl.’”

Grites says that Sunday Girl will be a fresh take on your typical coffee bar, incorporating simple, fresh, and often nostalgic menu offerings alongside well-made and delicately balanced café drinks that use only local products. Everything inside Sunday Girl will be from PA, most of which from the Philadelphia region. A variety of food and retail products will be available in addition to specialty coffees and other beverages.

Grites is also bringing her love of cheese to the table. “Cheese Louise!” – Sunday Girl’s very own cheese program – will feature all PA-made cheeses on a rotating schedule. Customers can build their own board, enjoy a single type of cheese, or purchase by the ounce to take home and enjoy. “Cheese Louise!” is anticipated to grow when Sunday Girl can bring in wine, which is in the plans for the next year-plus.

Sunday Girl aims to be as eco-conscious as possible. All to-go cups, lids, straws, etc. are biodegradable, and the café will also sell reusable coffee mugs and straws, which can be used forever to gain beverage discounts. The space is dog-friendly, as well.

Grites has worked in a number of industries, spanning journalism, fashion and tech marketing, public relations, as well as administrative management, with food and beverage jobs woven throughout and in-between.

“I’ve been dreaming of owning my own space since before college, but never knew exactly what that would be,” she said. “As I began to realize how community-driven coffee is, and how experiential wine can be, I knew I wanted to bridge that gap all in one place. This concept was born eight years ago, and has been building ever since. This place not only speaks to my values as a person, but speaks to my beliefs on giving back to and being a part of the unique community that is Philly.”
