Art in the Age is Hosting an Adult Boozy Spelling Bee With 100% of Ticket Proceeds Donated to EducationWorks
The Scipps National Spelling Bee is nothing short than entertaining to watch. Every year young students compete to spell words that most of us never even knew existed let alone know how to spell. Well, if you ever thought you had what it took to compete but are a little too old to enter (say 21+) then here’s a chance to live out your dream.
Art in the Age (116 N. 3rd St.) will be hosting their very first adult spelling bee competition, dubbed The Boozy Bee on Sunday, May 21 beginning at 5 pm (Dunce caps provided). The event arrives one week before the Scripps National Spelling Bee and 100% of proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to EducationWorks, a local non-profit organization designed to empower Philadelphia kids to reengage with their education. So not only will you get a chance to achieve your childhood fantasy, it’s all for a great cause.
Sponsored by Dunce Whiskey, the pyramid-powered bourbon inspired by the dunce cap’s stolen legacy, crafted by Art in the Age’s sister distillery Tamworth Distilling, imbibers will compete in a series of challenges that will leave only the greatest spelling whiz standing. Tickets are $15/person and include one slot in the competition, one Dunce cap, one Dunce Whiskey shot glass, and one shot of Dunce Whiskey (for liquid courage before stepping on stage). Guests are also invited to sip on a special one-night-only menu of themed cocktails (think: Bees Knees, floral flavors, and plenty of honey), available à la carte.
“We’re thrilled to add The Boozy Bee to our robust line-up of events,” noted Craig Richie, General Manager at Art in the Age. “Our bee benefits a local non-profit that works with the next generation of spelling bee champions. Participants will be sipping our Bee-themed cocktails — and Dunce Whiskey – for a cause, while enjoying some friendly competition!”
The grand prize for the winner is a bottle of Dunce Whiskey, a round of free cocktails at Art in the Age, and, of course, bragging rights and a glorious trophy. Additionally, the attendee who brings the most audience members to the competition will be awarded a Secret Special Hive Prize, which will be announced during the event.
All proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards EducationWorks, a Philadelphia non-profit that provides enriching education and career readiness programming, with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEAM), entrepreneurship, and social and emotional wellness. EducationWorks provides out-of-school, in-school-support, and summer services for thousands of students annually throughout Greater Philadelphia, putting students on a path to career exposure, opportunity, graduation, and future success.
