Women’s History Month at the Betsy Ross House – Tipsy History Returns!
The Betsy Ross House is celebrating Women’s History Month with a variety of great programing. Among the March events, Tipsy History … the Women’s History Month version “A Little Rebel” is set for March 25-27. Tour-goers will learn about the Betsy behind the flag and raise a glass to women everywhere. Check out the full list of upcoming events below:
- On Sunday, March 14 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., a Once Upon A Nation Storyteller will share short stories of women’s struggle to gain the vote and other stories of women throughout history who made often unsung contributions to society.
- The last two weekends in March take visitors into the trenches of the fight for women’s suffrage. On Sunday, March 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., meet Alice Paul American Quaker, suffragist, feminist, and women’s rights activist and one of the leaders of the campaign for the 19th Amendment and on Sunday, March 28, meet Frances Harper, an abolitionist, suffragist, poet, teacher and public speaker, who was one of the first African American women to be published in the United States.
- For some after-hours fun, we are bringing back our popular Tipsy History series with Tipsy History: The Little Rebel at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25 through Sunday, March 27 …
If you think you know all there is to know about Betsy Ross, has SHE got a story for you! Grab your girlfriends … yes, guy friends are welcome, too … for a Women’s History Month celebration complete with riveting stories, new insights, and, of course, a toast! Hear from Betsy, herself, how she earned her “Little Rebel” nickname. Hint … an elopement and treason are just part of the story!
Then, you’ll head into the House for a special women’s history-themed tour and finally, a walk around the corner to Art in the Age to enjoy a delicious, handcrafted cocktail and raise your glass to the ladies, past and present. Tours, which run about 90 minutes, will be timed and tickets limited to allow for proper social distancing. Masks are required. Tickets are $25 per person and must be purchased in advance at historicphiladelphia.org.
As a reminder, the House is open for tours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays through Mondays. Betsy, herself, is greeting guests in the courtyard and telling her fascinating life story twice each hour. Guests are being admitted to the courtyard in reduced numbers to allow for social distancing. To celebrate spring break, ,the House will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from March 26 through April 12.
For those guests who choose to tour the House, limited numbers are being admitted at intervals designed to allow at least one room of space between groups. Interactive exhibits have been temporarily removed and surfaces are being sanitized throughout the day. Only self-guided tours will be offered at this time. The Museum Shop is also open.
