5 Fun Free Things to Do Outdoors in August

August is already in full swing and it will be gone before you know it.  However, before we say goodbye to summer and hello to fall, why not take advantage of the summer weather while you got a chance.  Hey, we all remember what it was like last winter, so let’s maximize our time outdoors because before we know it we’ll be shoveling snow.

Philly Night Market

Aug. 14th | 6 pm – 10 pm | 35th & Lancaster (West Philly)

Aug. 14th the Night Market will be at 35th & Lancaster Ave. in West Philadelphia! Philly Night Market is an outdoor street festivals  that occur about four times during the year.  The festival which occurs in the evening from 6 pm – 10 pm includes food, music, activities.  The food is primarily provided by many of the popular Philly food trucks and local restaurants.

Wayne’s World Outdoor Movie Screening

Aug. 15th | 9 pm | Eakins Oval

Wayne’s World is a 1992 American film directed by Penelope Spheerisand starring Mike Myers as Wayne Campbell and Dana Carvey as Garth Algar, hosts of a public access television show in Aurora, Illinois. You won’t want to miss this classic!

Caribbean Festival

Aug. 17th | 12 pm – 8 pm | Penn’s Landing

A rich celebration of 14 Caribbean islands will treat you to a wholesome family fun in a beautiful atmosphere with a line up of authentic island sounds of reggae, roots international beat, hip-hop and gospel, poetry, island skits and creative on-stage dances, the pulsating sound of the steel band; all that’s complimented by a marketplace of Caribbean fashions, souvenirs, arts and craft. additionally, a “tings” Caribbean workshop; and a children’s corner, including an African/Caribbean children’s village enactment and maypole dancing.

Smooth Jazz Summer Nights Ft. Eric Darius

Smooth Jazz will fill the waterfront every Friday night in August. One of the summer season’s most popular events, the Penn’s Landing Smooth Jazz Summer Nights series plays host to nationally-renowned acts. Be prepared to listen to some of the country’s best smooth jazz artists in a beautiful riverfront venue. All Smooth Jazz concerts are FREE, family friendly, and open to the public.

40th St. Summer Series

August 30th | 6 pm | 40th & Walnut

Live music fills the alfresco space at 40th and Walnut Streets for the annual 40th Street Summer Series. Once a month every month this summer, talented musicians and performers perform an array of acts for attendees at the series of free outdoor concerts. Plus, be on the look out for complimentary (first come, first served) Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream samples and other treats to be handed out during the performance. All concerts take place on the green behind the Walnut Street Free Library at 40th and Walnut streets, begin at 6 p.m. and are totally free.
