(feature photo cred. Phillylovesfun.wordpress.com)

We’ve all been apart of the great debate between the city residents and the folks from the burbs.  Although, we all share love for the Philly there has always been banter back and forth on the pros and cons for each side. Since we here at Wooder Ice only cover things within the city we decided to give a friendly  jab to the suburbanites living in the Philly region.  Here’s our list of 10 reasons why city living beats the burbs.

Events

Where else are you going to go for pop-up dinners, bacon festivals, science after hours, etc.? Whether you’re looking for something to do solo or with friends the city is chalk full of cool events from hipster Olympics to Dali exhibits, the hardest part is finding time to do it all.  Just take a quick look at our events calendar and you’ll be surprised of just how many events are buzzing in the city.

Networking

Whether you’re just finishing school or an established professional the city offers the best networking opportunities.  From happy hour mixers to industry events the opportunities to swap business cards and make business and personal connections is endless.  In addition since Philly isn’t chalk full of ultra exclusive social clubs, you’re chances of a game changing encounter at a random bar or lounge is pretty high.

Best Place for Singles to Mingle

From business contacts to soul mates, the city offers an array of social clubs, mixers, and activities for singles to mingle.  Whether you’re into intramural sports, beer clubs, or just want to hang out at pop-up parks, Philly has something for everyone.  With the growing number of millennial transplants the dating pull never looked so good.

Less DUI Risk

We don’t condone drinking and driving but going out you’re going to get buzzed time to time.  However, to lessen the risk the city offers a plethora of car services including the wildly popular Uber.  Getting home after a night out on the time never got easier.  In addition the Subway services have been extended 24 hours on weekends which further decreases the necessity of you getting behind the wheel.  So save time, money, and ultimately a life and enjoy the perks of city transportation.

Save on Gas

septa

Sure SEPTA gets complaints for service and customer service but lets be honest riding public transportation specifically the trains make moving around town easier.  Whether you’re headed to Center City or the game you can get there in a jiffy and don’t have to worry about parking.  In fact many people ditch their cars all together in favor of bikes to save money and live a healthier lifestyle.

The Bodegas

So it’s late night and you have the craving for Tastycakes and chips or maybe you want to buy veggies and cold cuts for the week.  Either way you won’t have to get in your car and drive miles to get to a store or market.  Instead Bodegas (corner stores/mini-markets) are usually always within short walking distance.  Bodegas are always close, convenient, and clutch in times or hunger or house necessities.  If you’re lucky many of these places even offer delivery.

Nightlife

Sure there are bars and clubs outside of the city.  But lets be realistic, when it’s time to get your friends together for a night on the town, you head to the city.  With major clubs, lounges, and iconic bars all over the city there is no shortage of a great time.  The vibe and atmosphere the city offers cannot be duplicated anywhere else. So when it comes to nightlife, the city reigns supreme.

Row Homes are Iconic

Nothing says Philly more than the classic row home, heck even Rocky lived in one.  Easily recognizable in any photo or video, Philly row homes give the city character and identity, something many cities struggle with.  Who would want a cookie cutter townhouse with paper thin walls when you can have a sturdy brick row home.  Owning a row home is kinda like owning a piece of Philly history, besides, they sure don’t make them like they used to.

The Food Scene

restaurants

The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to food in the burbs is cookie cutter chain restaurants.  There are only so many times you can go to P.F Changs, Applebees, Panera Bread, or the Cheesecake Factory.  Granted those places offer good dishes but lets be realistic, the food scene in Philly is untouchable.  With new and innovative restaurants popping up on what seems like a daily basis, the food scene is outstanding. You can practically take a world tour of food and taste dishes from just about every region on the planet.  To add the proverbial cherry on top the food truck scene is equally impressive.  So for foodies, the city is where it’s at.

Date Spots

couples

Dinner, a movie, bowling, and miniature golf are pretty much at the top of the list of activities for couples in the burbs.  The city offers so many options to make each date interesting and fun.  From live shows, concerts, bourbon classes, acting class, comedy shows, pop-up movies, the list goes on and on.  There is essentially something new to do every ime you step out the door.  So to keep your relationship fresh the city is the place to be.
