It’s almost crazy to think Will Smith hasn’t had a street named after him yet but better late than never. In a recent Philadelphia City Council Meeting a resolution was passed to rename the 2000 block of 56th Street in Wynnefield “Will Smith Way.”

Famously rapping the lines “In West Philadelphia born and raised,” he put a global spotlight on his childhood stomping grounds. A graduate of Overbrook High School, throughout his career Will has blazed a trail in his industry including winning the first ever Grammy for rap alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, starring in the iconic Fresh Prince of Bel Air, as well as acting, directing, and producing in countless blockbuster movies.

City leaders said they “wanted to recognize Smith’s accomplishments in the entertainment industry along with his charitable contributions and advocacy for social justice and equality.” No word yet on a ceremony date or if and when Will Smith looks to attend the renaming.

Back in 2018 London-based artist Richard Wilson painted the a Will Smith mural at 4545 W. Girard Ave. on the side of the Gevurtz Furniture building. The mural garnered tons of attention including Will himself.
