SUMMARY:March First Saturday Open House - Mushroom Madness!
DESCRIPTION:Spring is almost here—get ready to forage by learning all about mushrooms during our March First Saturday Open House! Happening Saturday\, March 1st from 12 to 4 pm\, enjoy an afternoon packed with hands-on activities\, museum exploration\, and an “Introduction to Mushrooms” presentation given by Philadelphia Mycology Club president Sam Bucciarelli in our Victorian lecture hall at 1PM and again at 3PM. \nVisitors can also view our special exhibition of mushroom models created by the French anatomist and naturalist Dr. Louis Auzoux in the 1860s. The set of 32 papier-mâché models was created to help teach foragers which mushrooms are poisonous and which are safe to eat. \nAdmission to our First Saturday events is free to everyone! DESCRIPTION:Be transported to deep time during the Wagner’s upcoming February First Saturday Open House! \nSaturday\, February 1st from 12 – 4pm explore the Wagner’s vast natural history collection and rock out to the evolution of hearing as Paleontologist and singer/songwriter Matthew Bonnan and his band perform a selection of songs from his captivating pop/rock song cycle\, Once Upon Deep Time. \nA multi-media project including song & animation\, Once Upon Deep Time tells the story of how we humans evolved to perceive sound. The performance will take place at 2pm in the Wagner’s Lecture Hall with Q & A with the band to follow. \nThe Wagner’s Exhibit Hall will be open for self-guided exploration throughout the day\, as well as ongoing hands-on activities for families in the gallery\, including a real shark tooth dig and impression-making with fossils from our teaching collection! \nAdmission is free to everyone! DESCRIPTION:Shelter from the cold this December during the Wagner’s First Saturday Open House! Happening on Saturday\, December 7th from 12pm – 4pm\, visitors will dig up and identify different types of shark teeth\, craft paper snowflakes\, and learn about the history of the Wagner. Covering the life of William Wagner\, founding of the Institute\, and the architecture of our building\, the history of the Wagner talk will be given at 1pm and again at 3pm. \nThe Exhibit Hall will be open for self-guided exploration of the natural history collection throughout the day. Explore our 100\,000 natural history specimens\, including ancient fossils\, glowing minerals and animals from around the globe. Wander at your own pace or follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts. You can also pick up pencils and paper to draw from the specimens on display!
