Through five themes — including Prosperity and Inequity\, Internationalism\, Western Expansion\, Landscapes and Horizons\, and Geometry and Modern Design — A Nation of Artists showcases how American artists have shaped and challenged our culture.\n\nThis exhibition is part of a collaboration with the Philadelphia Art Museum\, showcasing a simultaneous exhibition in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Together\, the two institutions feature more than 1\,000 works\, including over 120 iconic paintings and decorative arts from the Middleton Family Collection\, offering fresh perspectives on the evolving story of American art.\n\nA Nation of Artists will run through September 5\, 2027 at PAFA.

DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to go behind the scenes and explore the creative process of the next generation of emerging artists! \nOne of the most anticipated events on PAFA’s calendar\, Open Studio Night is the one time each year when PAFA students open their studios to the public to show and discuss their works in progress. \nThe event takes place on upper floors of the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building at 128 N. Broad Street—comprising of individual studios where PAFA students develop and refine their paintings\, sculpture\, prints\, animations\, and drawings. Open Studio Night gives visitors a rare look into the creative process of a new generation of emerging artists\, and a sense of how they develop their ideas. \nA special addition to this year’s event is tied to the exhibition Threaded Currents\, a collaboration between PAFA and the Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM)\, on view in PAFA’s School of Fine Arts Gallery and Tuttleman Sculpture Gallery from January 22nd – April 12th. SUMMARY:Museum After Hours | Electric Boogie Too Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Electric Boogie Too is a two-hour workshop created by artist/designer Petra Floyd in which participants think through their relationships with social hierarchies and systems of power while learning how to do the Electric Slide. Floyd explores music and dance as social technologies for orienting ourselves in unknowable spaces/times in a joyful experience inviting participants to dance together in PAFA’s Rotunda\, where Saya Woolfalk’s installation\, We Emerge at the Sunset of Your Ideology\, is on view. \nFebruary 16\, 2024\, 7–9pm\nThe Rotunda\, Historic Landmark Building\nAdvance registration is required \nAbout Petra Floyd: Petra Floyd received a BA in Studio Art from Swarthmore College in 2012. They earned an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Art in 2022\, where they received a Lea Simonds graduate fellowship\, project funding from The Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art@ the Frontier\, and the inaugural Ken Meyer Professional Studio Development award. Petra is a BLK ART LAB artist-in-residence at Pittsburgh’s Protohaven makerspace and a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council’s Black Arts Action Committee. They are a 2022-2023 recipient of The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh and the Heinz Endowments’ Creative Development awards. They have been a Freshworks artist at Kelly Strayhorn Theater (2021)\, a resident artist at 40th Street Artist-in-Residence Program (2016- 2017)\, a Fob Holder at Second State Press (2016)\, and a Post-college Apprentice at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (2014). \nPetra Floyd {she/they} is a queer first­ generation Liberian-American multidisciplinary artist and designer raised by working-class immigrants in Philadelphia\, and she lives and works in Pittsburgh. Petra makes whatever she wants\, however she wants\, ideally making herself laugh throughout the process. Petra values improvised\, devised\, and collaborative modes of making and thinking. She links up with other instigator-activators to craft small moments and performances using close-at­hand materials and resources. Petra dreams about group movement and gameplay spaces for self-reflection and expansion. She makes sounds\, videos\, drawings\, and performances happen\, with feeling.
