SUMMARY:Ornamental Plants in Philadelphia Gardens in the Early 1700s
DESCRIPTION:Before 1750\, Philadelphia gardens were not just kitchen gardens\, they also cultivated lots of ornamental plants\, grown for their beauty\, colors\, scent\, and to make nature prints as a form of botanical art. Many of these plants were imported from Europe\, but some were native to the Pennsylvania region. There were gardens in Germantown and at Stenton (James Logan’s estate in north Philadelphia) that cultivated and celebrated vibrant ornamental plants like anemones\, tulips\, daffodils\, roses\, lilies\, columbines\, Polianthes tuberosa\, violets\, and African\, French and European marigolds. \nJoin historian Miranda Mote for a lecture that tells a story of beautiful\, ornamental plants in colonial Philadelphia gardens\, before 1750. \nMiranda Mote\, PhD is a historian\, artist\, and educator based in Philadelphia and the 2023-24 Garden Club of America / Prince Charitable Trusts Rome Prize\, Landscape Architecture Fellow. She teaches history and design\, works with children in K-12 schools and public venues\, designs teaching games for children\, and is currently writing an arts focused literacy and botany curriculum of lessons designed especially for children that live in urban environments.  She established Botanography in 2022 as a non-profit to directly serve students and families in Philadelphia County and believes that every school should have a garden classroom where students can connect with plants every day. \nThis program can be attended in the Skyline Room on Parkway Central’s Fourth Floor. No registration required. Join us earlier in the afternoon for a garden inspired children’s storytime and activity. Learn more here.

SUMMARY:Private Finance\, Public Power: A Free Talk on the History of Bank Supervision in America
DESCRIPTION:Banks may be private\, profit-driven institutions—but the public has always shaped the risks they take and paid the price when they fail.\nPrivate Finance\, Public Power explores this uneasy partnership over two centuries of American history\, from the wildcat banks of the early republic to the rise of federal deposit insurance and modern financial regulation. \nWharton professor Peter Conti-Brown and historian Sean Vanatta bring this story to life with colorful characters and surprising moments: rogues looting failed banks\, con artists posing as government examiners\, bribes paid in oyster dinners\, and reformers struggling to build order out of chaos. Through repeated crises and improvisation\, today’s complex banking oversight system emerged—flawed\, strained\, but largely functional. \nIn this talk\, Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown explores why this history matters for understanding the challenges facing U.S. banking today. \nThis event will be held in room 131/132 on the first floor of the Heim Center.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Beekeeping Before 1719
DESCRIPTION:Keeping bees (apiculture) was new to North America in the 1600s\, brought to the north-east by English and German colonists to produce honey and wax. The earliest record of apiculture in Pennsylvania explains how German settlers in Germantown kept honeybees\, cultivated honey and wax\, and celebrated bees with poems and stories. \nJoin historian Miranda Mote for a lecture that tells a story of beekeeping in Germantown before 1719. \nMiranda Mote\, PhD is a historian\, artist\, and educator based in Philadelphia and the 2023-24 Garden Club of America / Prince Charitable Trusts Rome Prize\, Landscape Architecture Fellow. SUMMARY:Author Laurie Halse Anderson Visit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting event with Laurie Halse Anderson\, the award‑winning author of many amazing books for kids and teens! \nLaurie has stories that readers all over the world love—more than eight million copies of her books have been sold! Some of her books\, like Speak and Chains\, were even chosen as finalists for the National Book Award\, which is a really big honor for authors. \nUSA 250 \nIn 2026\, Americans are celebrating the 250th anniversary of The Declaration of Independence and the founding of our country.  Laurie’s historical fiction novels Chains\, Forge\, Ashes and Rebellion\,1776 transport us back to that time and illustrate the lives of teenagers growing up during the American Revolutionary War.   In these books\, you can follow enslaved 13-year-old Isabel Gardener and her 5-year-old sister Ruth\, enslaved 14-year-old soldier Curzon Smith\, and working-class teen Elsbeth Culpepper\, as they struggle to make the choices necessary to survive the war years.  Follow them through Boston\, Rhode Island\, New York City\, Philadelphia\, Valley Forge\, Charleston\, and to the war ending Battle of Yorktown\, Virginia.  These books show the issues real people of the time faced as they dealt with family separations and punishments inflicted on them because of slavery\, poverty\, war\, and disease.  As the nation’s founders were declaring that all men are created equal\, with the right to life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness\, the books ask you to think about being in chains while hearing those lofty ideals.  Would you join the army and fight for principles of equality and freedom knowing that they may not apply to you because of the color of your skin\, or gender?  We will be discussing these and other questions as we use Laurie’s books to remember the everyday heroes of our early American history.

SUMMARY:Community First Plan Focus Group
DESCRIPTION:This in-person community focus group is part of Friends of the Rail Park’s Community First Plan\, an effort to understand how the Rail Park can grow in ways that reflect its values and responsibilities to the neighborhoods it runs through. These conversations help guide how we approach growth with care and accountability while exploring how we can amplify work being done within our communities and what connections we can make to further their causes.\n\n\n\nThe discussion will explore how the Rail Park can support economic opportunity\, housing\, culture\, and the environment\, centering the experiences and priorities of people who live and work nearby. \nA project of this scale should not grow or change without the voices of the communities it runs through and alongside. The Community First Plan places those voices at the center to help ensure the Rail Park benefits neighborhoods in meaningful\, tangible ways. \nAll participants will receive a Visa gift card. Food and childcare will be provided. \nIf you need any accommodations including translation or food options\, please email us at friends@therailpark.org.

SUMMARY:From Kelpius to the Rod of Iron: Cults and New Religious Movements in Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:The state of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia are home to a diverse array of churches and religious organizations. This program will outline the history of some of the most famous religious monuments of our region. We will begin in the 17th century with the figure of Johannes Kelpius\, a German Pietist who established an apocalyptic religious community in the Wissahickon Valley. We will then move to the 19th century to examine the Theosophical Society\, a new religion that merged East and West\, whose United Lodge is still located in Center City. We will conclude by discussing the Iron Rod Ministries\, an offshoot of the Korean American Unification Church\, which until recently was headquartered in Wayne County\, east of the city of Scranton. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. He studies the history of utopian thought\, new religious movements\, and the intersection between religion and the state. \nAttend this program in person in the Education\, Philosophy and Religion Department\, or view it live on Zoom by registering at https://freelibrary-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cNQ2q3fvQ4CqWBN9IgeFXw#/registration
