SUMMARY:Private Finance\, Public Power: A Free Talk on the History of Bank Supervision in America
DESCRIPTION:Banks may be private\, profit-driven institutions—but the public has always shaped the risks they take and paid the price when they fail.\nPrivate Finance\, Public Power explores this uneasy partnership over two centuries of American history\, from the wildcat banks of the early republic to the rise of federal deposit insurance and modern financial regulation. \nWharton professor Peter Conti-Brown and historian Sean Vanatta bring this story to life with colorful characters and surprising moments: rogues looting failed banks\, con artists posing as government examiners\, bribes paid in oyster dinners\, and reformers struggling to build order out of chaos. Through repeated crises and improvisation\, today’s complex banking oversight system emerged—flawed\, strained\, but largely functional. \nIn this talk\, Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown explores why this history matters for understanding the challenges facing U.S. banking today. \nThis event will be held in room 131/132 on the first floor of the Heim Center.

SUMMARY:What is a “Cult?” Understanding Controversial New Religious Movements
DESCRIPTION:The word “cult” is frequently used in the media as a pejorative term. It refers to a dangerous and often violent fringe religious group that promotes beliefs\, values\, and practices that clash with mainstream culture. This program will outline the emergence of the discourse on “cults” in 20th century America and the role of the media in popularizing this term. We will discuss the divisive psychological theory of brainwashing promoted by anti-cult activists\, the public perception of charismatic “cult leaders” such as Jim Jones and David Koresh\, and the role of the academic study of religion in helping us better understand controversial religious movements. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. He studies the history of utopian thought\, new religion movements\, and the intersection between religion and the state. \nAttend this program in person in the Education\, Philosophy and Religion Department\, or view it live on Zoom by registering at https://tinyurl.com/2233w4wr

SUMMARY:Comix Club
DESCRIPTION:We’ll  gather in the Art Department\, on Parkway Central Library’s 2nd floor from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  Anyone age 18+ who is interested in making comics\, or just kickin’ back and reading ‘em is welcome to stop by! For those in the mood to ink\, we will be providing some blank paneled pages and other drawing supplies. Recently we started gathering comics made during these meetings for a future Comix Club zine! \nComix Club attendees will also have the opportunity to view our Philadelphia Comics Collection (PCC)! This collection contains work by local comix artists\, which are often also printed and published in Philly. The entirety of this collection is catalogued and available for library use. If you can’t make it to Comix Club\, the whole collection can be found on special PCC-designated shelves by the Art & Literature Reference Desk. Please be aware that the content of many of these comics is mature and graphic in nature\, and so readers must be 18 and up. \nOne continuous goal for Comix Club is to continue to build this inclusive and precious in-house collection. If you are a Philadelphia-based artist with a comic of your own\, or have any local comics you’d like to donate to PCC\, feel free to bring them to our meet-ups!
