SUMMARY:A DVAA Screening of "The Invisible Man" (1933)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at DVAA for a special screening of James Whale’s 1933 classic “The Invisible Man”. Popcorn and candy will be provided at the event. DVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Movie: While researching a new drug\, Dr. Jack Griffin stumbles on a potion that can make him invisible. When he reveals his new ability to his old mentor and his fiancée\, it’s clear that a side effect of the potion is insanity. Jack goes on a violent rampage\, and the police struggle to hunt him down\, unable to see their target\, while his mentor and his former partner desperately try to devise a plan to capture him. \nThis is an accompanying event of Colin Pezzano’s Group Exhibition “Materialize”. \nAbout the Exhibition: Craft Movie Club presents: Materialize explores the intersection of classic cinema and contemporary craft practices. Sixteen artists\, working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal\, and glass\, respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, The Invisible Man. In the film\, invisibility is made possible through the extraction of a flower used originally to bleach textiles. Just as the scientist Griffin transforms himself by manipulating the natural world\, these artists transform raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects. Ninety-one years later\, the film’s themes of invisibility\, scientific experimentation\, and ethical dilemmas remain relevant. This exhibition redefines expectations\, blending experimental techniques with traditional crafts to provoke thought and inspire a modern audience.

SUMMARY:Materialize
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition: Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to partner with Craft Movie Club to present “Materialize\,” an exhibition that showcases sixteen artists\, all working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal and glass to respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, “The Invisible Man.” \nIn the film\, scientist Jack Griffin uses an extraction from an obscure flower—originally used to bleach textiles—to render himself invisible. How\, “Materialize” asks\, do the artists on display mirror the scientist at the heart of the film? How do they manipulate the natural world to transform their raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects? And do they\, in performing their craft\, ever transform themselves? \nMaterialize will be on view in Gallery 1 at Da Vinci Art Alliance starting October 31 until November 17. The opening reception will take place on Saturday\, November 2\, from 4-7 pm.

SUMMARY:Finding Healing In The Remnants
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the Opening of Finding Healing in The Remnants: A Solo Exhibition by Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS) at DVAA! \nAbout the Exhibition: What do we do with the shards of something broken—especially when the thing that’s been broken is the self? This is the question at the heart of “Finding Healing in the Remnants\,” an exhibition of work by multimedia artist Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS) proudly presented by Da Vinci Art Alliance. Rebuilding has a reputation for being painful—but what if there were comfort to be found in the familiarity of the pieces? \n“This exhibition is an exploration of the ways in which feeling broken can transform us\, as well as the things we can do to transform ourselves through that healing process\,” says SKOVeS\, an internationally shown multimedia artist and muralist living and working in Philadelphia. Sammy received their BFA in Fine Art from Rowan University in 2016. Sammy has worked on over 30 murals in Philadelphia and prides themselves on sharing the skills they have learned while working in public art for the last seven years. They are passionate about exploring healing\, connection and warmth through a variety of mediums—especially murals\, mosaic and collage. \nFinding Healing In The Remnants will be on view in Gallery 2 at Da Vinci Art Alliance starting October 31 until November 17. The opening reception will take place on Friday\, November 1\, from 4-7 pm.

SUMMARY:Experimental Woven Collage Making with Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS)
DESCRIPTION:This experimental collage class will teach participants to make their own paper collage weavings! We will explore the idea of finding healing through intuitive art making and getting lost in the process of creating\, by weaving together strips of different colored paper\, mixing in other collaged elements\, and letting the materials and process dictate what our creations become. \nDVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. SUMMARY:Building Your Own Permeable Backyard with Nancy Agati & DesignPhiladelphia
DESCRIPTION:As a part of DesignPhiladelphia’s 20th Annual Festival\, join us within Nancy Agati’s installation “Aqua Terrace” to learn more about how to transform concrete spaces into permeable ecosystems that help mitigate flooding issues and rebuild water systems in Philadelphia. \nPhiladelphia Artist Nancy Agati will present examples of her artwork: sculpture\, installations\, and public participatory projects that address the topic of water. Her work emphasizes the contemplative beauty of clean-flowing waterways in urban areas\, with several projects that address flooding and stormwater runoff in the built environment. Agati’s permeable surface art projects offer mitigation strategies for climate-related water management issues and seek to foster reverence and stewardship for nature and clean water advocacy. \nThis workshop will highlight a step-by-step process for small-scale DIY permeable surface yard installations. Participants will be introduced to a variety of possible materials and building methods. Time will be allotted for sketching ideas\, answering questions\, discussing costs\, and learning about the benefits of porous materials. Participants are encouraged to bring cell phone photos of the yard they wish to transform.

SUMMARY:Preserves | Batch #2 Film Screening with Lino Kino and Da Vinci Art Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden in continuing our celebration of 16mm film with Philly-based media arts collective Lino Kino. This wide-ranging batch of experimental film dating from 1946 to 1984 seeks to portray movement as a full expression of the female body and the self. The camera meanders through rural and urban landscapes\, from packed gatherings to isolated rooms where the choreography of pedestrian movement\, social engagement and desire are as vital as the freedom found in dance. \nBatch #2 Lineup \nRitual in Transfigured Time\, Maya Deren (1946 • 15 min) \nSilverpoint\, Barbara Linkevitch (1974 • 25 min) \nMirrored Reason\, Stan Vanderbeek (1979 • 9 min) \nKeep Moving\, Rohesia Hamilton Metcalfe (1984 • 10 min) \nAll films sourced from the Enoch Pratt Free Library film archive in Baltimore\, Maryland.
