SUMMARY:Turning the Power: Indian Boarding Schools\, Native American Anthropologists\, and the Race to Preserve Indigenous Cultures
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Lunch at the Library presentation from Nathan Sowry who will be discussing his new book: Turning the Power: Indian Boarding Schools\, Native American Anthropologists\, and the Race to Preserve Indigenous Cultures.  \nIn Turning the Power Nathan Sowry examines how some Native American students from the boarding school system\, with its forced assimilationist education\, became key cultural informants for anthropologists conducting fieldwork during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Salvage anthropologists of this era relied on Native informants to accomplish their mission of “saving” Native American cultures and ultimately turned many informants into anthropologists after years of fieldwork experience. \nSowry investigates ten relatively unknown Native American anthropologists and collaborators who\, from 1878 to 1930\, attended a religiously affiliated mission school\, a federal Indian boarding school\, or both. He tells the stories of Native anthropologists Tichkematse\, William Jones\, and James R. Murie\, who were alumni of the Hampton Institute in Virginia. Richard Davis and Cleaver Warden were among the first and second classes to attend the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. Amos Oneroad graduated from the Haskell Indian Industrial Training School in Lawrence\, Kansas\, after attending mission and boarding schools in South Dakota. D. C. Duvall\, John V. Satterlee\, and Florence and Louis Shotridge attended smaller boarding and mission schools in Montana\, Wisconsin\, and Alaska Territory\, respectively. \nTurning the Power follows the forced indoctrination of Native American students and then details how each of them “turned the power\,” using their English knowledge and work experience in the anthropological field to embrace\, document\, and preserve their Native cultures rather than abandoning their heritage.

DESCRIPTION:Join the American Philosophical Society on Thursday\, February 12\, 2026\, to welcome Natasha McEnroe for a discussion on ‘A Traveller from an Antique Land’: Treasures from the Society of Antiquaries of London. \nOriginally formed in a tavern in 1707 by three enthusiasts who brought historic objects for discussion and study (over a tankard of ale)\, the Society of Antiquaries of London now holds one of the most dazzling collections of art and antiquities in the world. SUMMARY:The Franklin Stove: An Unintended American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The surprising story of Benjamin Franklin’s most famous invention—and a new take on the Founding Father we thought we knew. \nJoin the American Philosophical Society and The Library Company of Philadelphia on Tuesday\, January 6\, 2026\, to hear from Joyce E. Chaplin (APS 2020) on Benjamin Franklin’s scientific innovation and consumer invention\, the Franklin stove. \nThe biggest revolution in Benjamin Franklin’s lifetime was made to fit in a fireplace. Assembled from iron plates like a piece of flatpack furniture\, the Franklin stove became one of the era’s most iconic consumer products\, spreading from Pennsylvania to England\, Italy\, and beyond. It was more than just a material object\, however—it was also a hypothesis. \nhttps://www.amphilsoc.org/events/franklin-stove-unintended-american-revolution

SUMMARY:Transcribing The Revolutionary City
DESCRIPTION:Join the APS on February 26 at 6:00 p.m. as we transcribe the stories of Philadelphians during the American Revolution. These documents are already digitized and available for viewing on The Revolutionary City: A Portal to the Nation’s Founding’s digital portal but they still need to be transcribed. \nThis transcription event features materials curated by the Center for the History of Science as part of their work on “America’s Scientific Revolutionaries\,” a two-year initiative sponsored by the Richard Lounsbery Foundation highlighting lesser known scientists and physicians active during the Age of Revolutions. Attendees will transcribe documents related to 18th century chemistry debates\, meteorological observations\, and the nature and uses of electricity. \nThis program will take place in the APS’s Philosophical Hall. Please either bring your laptop and be ready to work in groups to decipher these revolutionary stories.

SUMMARY:Investigating a Peale in Paris
DESCRIPTION:A portrait of George Washington\, leaning on a cannon on the battlefield at Princeton\, has hung in the Paris residence of the American ambassador to France since the 1980s. Some credited the painting to Charles Willson Peale\, but its execution appeared to fall short of many of Peale’s portraits. In 2019\, the Department of State’s Office of Cultural Heritage commissioned a study to research the picture’s provenance\, evaluate its appearance and condition\, and determine the artist’s materials and techniques. Art historian Carol Soltis was enlisted for her experience with the work of Charles Willson Peale and conservator Emily MacDonald-Korth for her expertise in authenticating paintings using scientific methods. \nJoin the American Philosophical Society and the Library Company of Philadelphia in welcoming Carol Soltis and Emily MacDonald-Korth as they recount the investigation that took them from Philadelphia to Washington\, DC\, and ultimately\, to Paris as they chased the trail of clues to the painting’s identity. Armed with archival research (including some unlikely sources)\, material evidence\, and sharp observational skills\, Soltis and MacDonald-Korth were able to confirm the painting was by Peale. \nAt this event\, we will screen a short film documenting the study and hear directly from Soltis and MacDonald-Korth about how they drew their conclusions.
