Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Is Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday With a Free Ice-Skating Day and Cake-Cutting

On January 31, Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest will host Philly Skates Free, a full-day celebration featuring free ice skating and skate rentals from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, presented by Rivers Casino Philadelphia.

Produced by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC), the event doubles as a birthday-themed kickoff to America’s 250th year, inviting Philadelphians of all ages to enjoy a joyful, accessible day on the Delaware River Waterfront.

“Philly Skates Free is about opening the Waterfront to everyone and creating a moment of joy that feels unmistakably Philadelphia,” said DRWC President and CEO Joseph A. Forkin. “As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday all year long in Philadelphia, we’re proud to help kick things off with a free, welcoming celebration that brings neighbors together on the ice.”

From morning skate sessions to late-night spins under the lights, Philly Skates Free transforms RiverRink Winterfest into an all-day party with something happening every hour:

  • FREE skating admission + skate rentals from 11 AM–11 PM

  • Birthday cake cutting at noon, with complimentary cake while supplies last

  • Free face painting from 12–2 PM

  • DJ entertainment in the Lodge from 6–9 PM

  • Half-off happy hour from 6–10 PM

  • Waterfront views, fire pits, and Winterfest vibes all day long

Food and drinks will be available for purchase from Winterfest favorites including Chickie & Pete’s, Philly Taco, and Skelly’s, along with special birthday-themed menu items during the evening happy hour.

Beyond the rink, Philly Skates Free features a lineup of interactive pop-ups and prize opportunities throughout the day:

  • Philadelphia Visitor Center inviting guests to sign the Philly Phambassador pledge and enter a prize raffle

  • Ensemble Arts pop-up in the Lodge with show promotions, merch, and ticket giveaways

  • Wawa Welcome America on-site with ticket giveaways

  • Jacquin’s offering complimentary samples and giveaways

“Philly Skates Free brings our community together to enjoy the waterfront and celebrate Philadelphia during this historic year,” said Scott Lokke, General Manager of Rivers Casino Philadelphia. “We’re proud to welcome residents and ensure the Delaware River Waterfront is part of the energy, excitement, and shared experiences happening across the city.”
