SUMMARY:Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. To learn more\, visit freelibrary.org/specialcollections and freelibrary.org/gpd. \nThis exhibition can be viewed in the Second Floor West Gallery of Parkway Central Library from May 2\, 2026 through January 2\, 2027.

SUMMARY:Wish Wall
DESCRIPTION:What do you want America to be like in the future? Perhaps you have a wish for your own future. \nVisit our wish wall\, located in the 2nd Floor West Gallery\, and write or draw your vision for our nation’s future. Your wish will then be added to the wall to encourage further discussion\, and to display the diversity of lived experiences\, stories\, and desires of our community. \nThe Free Library encourages patrons to make their voice heard and delve deeper into civic engagement. By advancing literacy\, guiding learning\, and inspiring curiosity\, the Free Library of Philadelphia can provide avenues for patrons to work towards making their wishes into reality. \nThis program is a part of the exhibition celebrating America’s 250th\, Philadelphia: For the People\, which will be on display from May 2026 – January 2027 in the 2nd Floor West Gallery of the Parkway Central Library.

SUMMARY:Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Before movements had hashtags\, before conversations moved online\, women gathered in living rooms\, community centers\, and rec halls to tell the truth about their lives. Set in a small-town Ohio rec center in the early 1970s\, Liberation follows a group of women who come together for a consciousness-raising meeting—unsure what to expect\, but certain they need one another. As stories unfold about work\, marriage\, motherhood\, race\, desire\, and ambition\, the room becomes a place of courage\, laughter\, conflict\, and possibility. \nMoving between past and present\, the play asks what those gatherings made possible—and what they left unfinished. What does freedom really look like? Who gets to claim it? And what do we inherit from the generations who came before us? Funny\, intimate\, and deeply human\, Liberation reminds us that change begins when people come together. This is where stories are shared. This is where ideas are challenged. This is where we gather.

You may recognize something as your own\, or find something you never knew you were carrying. \nMade for anyone who has ever lost a bag\, gotten stuck\, or missed a (metaphoric) flight\, this trans(formational) installation asks: how do you know it’s time to move on when you don’t know where you’re going? \nProduced by The Bearded Ladies Cabaret\nPart of FringeArt’s 2026 Festival & Collective Futures \nInstallation on view September 10-December 20\, 2026\nat The Hairport | 444 N 3rd Street\, Philadelphia PA 19123 \nInstallation hours:\nWednesday\, Thursday & Friday 4-9PM | Last timed entry at 8:15PM\nSaturday & Sunday 11AM-3PM| Last timed entry at 2:15PM \nLive events at The Hairport | Saturdays at 8PM \nThe Hairport is an interactive\, immersive installation filled with costumes\, cardboard props\, and other ephemera from the Bearded Ladies Cabaret’s 16-year performance history. Visitors will make their way through a sprawling multi-room space made to look like a fantastical\, metaphorical “airport”. Visitors will be invited to interact with components of the installation and may encounter docents in guiding roles. The experience will culminate in a “lounge” space full of “Bearded baggage” which will also serve as the performance site for the Now Hoarding: In-Flight Entertainment live event series. \nIt will take visitors approximately 60-75 minutes to view the entirety of the Priority Hoarding installation. Groups of 6 will enter the installation\, at 15-minute timed entry intervals. An opportunity to ride a Surrey bike is offered but not required.

SUMMARY:Core Sommelier Course (Fall Semester) at the Philly Wine School
DESCRIPTION:Eight weeks\, 16 sessions\, and the entry point to a full professional wine curriculum. \nThe Philly Wine School has taught this material since 2001. The Core course combines the school’s Foundation and Intermediate programs into one semester — the full sequence in half the calendar time\, and for less than taking them separately. \nEach Sunday runs two sections. The first works through a wine region: France\, Italy\, Spain and Portugal\, North America\, Australia\, South America. The second builds tasting skill\, from sensory mechanics through varietal structure to blind identification. By week seven students are tasting blind. By week eight they are being examined on it. \nThe teaching is old-school and deliberately demanding — lecture\, guided tasting\, discussion\, instructor feedback\, written exams. Most students find in the first two weeks that they knew less than they thought. That is the design. Bring a notebook. \nGraduates earn Level III certification from the National Wine School and can continue into the Advanced program — four semesters\, 32 classes — and then to master-level study. \nKeith Wallace founded the school in 2001. A Napa-trained winemaker and the author of Corked & Forked\, he has taught at Drexel University. Alana Zerbe is director of wine education; she holds a J.D. and an LL.M.\, practiced law in Washington before moving into wine full time\, and developed the National Wine School’s Level One and Level Three programs. Both teach this course. \nTuition covers the course workbook and tasting materials\, both in-class exams\, and Level III certification on completion. No prerequisites. Classes are held at 109 S. 22nd St. in Rittenhouse. \n\n“For over 20 years\, this independent institution has quietly trained the next wave of sommeliers\, winemakers\, and beverage professionals.” — AWS Wine Journal\, American Wine Society Educational Foundation\, Summer 2025 \n\n\n“The best wine school\, period. Everything I’ve achieved in the world of wine\, I owe to them.” — Neil Ross\, director\, Vernick Restaurant Group

SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n  \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n  \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli

SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2025 she was the subject of a solo exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport\, participated in 11 group exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York and was a nominee for the Pew Fellowship. \nInstagram – @sophie6598\nWebsite – SophieCWhite.com

SUMMARY:Teddy Leads Adams & Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Join Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Grammy Award-winning conductor-composer Teddy Abrams (’08) for an afternoon of vivid symphonic storytelling. The program opens with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8\, showcasing the composer’s knack for mischief and irony\, complete with a witty imitation of a metronome and a tip of the hat to Haydn. Tania León’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Stride\, written to honor the legacy of suffragist Susan B. Anthony\, follows. Composed for the New York Philharmonic’s project marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment\, it combines the sounds of León’s Cuban American heritage with a dark\, restless energy. \n  \nThe afternoon culminates with John Adams’ Harmonielehre. A modern symphonic classic since its 1985 premiere\, this exhilarating work marked Adams’ breakthrough as one of today’s most influential composers. Inspired by a vivid dream\, its three movements surge with pulsing rhythms and shimmering waves of color in celebration of the composer’s 80th birthday.

Prime yourself for an ebullient evening with the boisterous sounds of the kumbia-klezmer-punk collective Mariposas Galácticas\, whose music is inspired by their Ancestor’s shared roots in “radical joy.” \nThen sit forward for a screening of Kristal’s short film Expanding Sanctuary  — the winner of the 2024 BlackStar Philadelphia Filmmaker Award — which flips the script on the current moment by telling the story of an immigrant mother’s triumphant fight for safety for Philly families. \nAnd\, of course\, leave filled not only with joy\, but with a delicious dinner by the James Beard Award-winning Chef Cristina Martínez of South Philly Barbacoa.
