SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania Presents The Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1800s
DESCRIPTION:How has the makeup of who is an American changed since the American Revolution? How have the people in that changing face of America continuously reinvigorated and reasserted the founding ideals of the country? By examining the documents left by our ancestors in the time leading up to America’s 100th birthday\, this display will ask those questions of their descendants. This exhibit draws on collections at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. It will be curated in partnership with ethnic and genealogical societies that seek to connect Americans to their ancestors through research\, programs\, and networking opportunities. \nBy the time of the nation’s Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1876\, enormous waves of German and Irish immigrants had arrived in Pennsylvania\, and significant migrations of free and enslaved people of African descent had moved from the South\, using the Underground Railroad and following Emancipation during and after the Civil War. What do the records of their lives suggest about how they saw their roles as Americans and as newly arrived Pennsylvanians?

Only after jeopardizing his fortune\, his family’s well-being (and their chastity) is he forced to recognize his folly having allowed himself to be seduced by such a cultish\, self-serving zealot. \nAs we too seem to have fallen under the spell of self-serving zealots\, Tartuffe is very much the play of the moment.

DESCRIPTION:The Kammerspiel announces the world premiere of Bob Sloan’s brazen new adaptation of Molière’s TARTUFFE. The production will open at the Performance Garage on February 20th and runs Friday through Sunday until March 8th. \nRiffing on the original vitality of Molière’s rhymed couplets\, this new take on the play brings a contemporary candor and even a soupçon of vitriol  to Molière’s unsettlingly prescient text. \nOften considered Molière’s greatest play\, Tartuffe follows the journey of Orgon\, epitome of Bourgeois-ness\, who has become entranced by the ultra-pious charlatan Tartuffe. Only after jeopardizing his fortune\, his family’s well-being (and their chastity) is he forced to recognize his folly having allowed himself to be seduced by such a cultish\, self-serving zealot. \nAs we too seem to have fallen under the spell of self-serving zealots\, Tartuffe is very much the play of the moment.

Her collaborations with notable instrumentalists stand as a testament to her versatility and the high regard in which she is held by her peers. Ruth’s discography has garnered international recognition\, and her commissioned works have earned numerous awards\, fellowships\, and honors. She lectures and performs globally on topics connecting theology\, history\, justice\, culture\, and the arts. A committed music educator with over twenty-five years of experience\, Ruth is the first African American woman to serve as the founding director of a university jazz studies program in the U.S. She serves as an artist-in-residence at Temple University and has held residencies and visiting scholar positions nationally and internationally. Concordia College awarded her an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her contributions to the arts\, education\, and justice. Ruth has dedicated over thirty years to serving and supporting marginalized communities\, and her career reflects a deep commitment to artistic excellence\, justice\, and community empowerment. \n\n\n\n\n\n
