SUMMARY:Pumpkin "Cabbage Patch Kids"
DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, Hillary Bor and Chef Ian Moroney opened Pumpkin BYOB on a sleepy stretch of South Street with a fresh vision for cooking simply and seasonally. Now\, twenty years later\, the neighborhood is thriving\, as are farm-to-table restaurants around the city. \nTo celebrate their 20th anniversary\, Pumpkin will devote the second half of 2024 to one of Ian’s favorite ingredients: No\, not pumpkin. Cabbage! \nThey have invited over a dozen chefs from the Philadelphia area to create a dish using cabbage that reflects the style of their cooking\, heritage\, and restaurant. They’re calling them the Cabbage Patch Kids. Each dish will run for three nights only (Tuesday-Thursday) on the normal three course prix fixe menu at Pumpkin\, either as one of the appetizers or one of the entree choices. Each month will feature at least two Cabbage Patch Kid recipes\, beginning in May until the end of the year. There will be a punch card\, where diners can earn a free dinner at Pumpkin by trying eight of the cabbage dishes. \nThe first Cabbage Patch Kid was Chef Alex Yoon from Little Fish. Little Fish is the first restaurant Ian worked at when he moved from Syracuse to Philadelphia\, about 25 years ago\, back when his father owned it. Now Alex is the chef and owner and while a lot has changed\, there is definitely a throughline. Alex’s dish was a charred cabbage and pork dumpling. \nChef Alex will be joined in May by Chef Ange Branca of the newly opened Kampar. Their two cabbage dishes will celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. \nJune will see two new Cabbage Patch Kids\, celebrating Pride Month: Joncarl Lachman of Winkel and Diana Widjojo of Rice and Sambal. \nHere’s the current list of Cabbage Patch Kids: \nAlex Yoon\, Little Fish\nAlexandra Holt\, Roxanne\nAndrew Wood\, Le Virtu\nAnge Branca\, Kampar\nCarlos Aparicio\, El Chingon\nCasey Webb\, Man v Food\nChance Anies\, Tabachoy\nDiana Widjojo\, Rice & Sambal\nEli Collins\, A.Kitchen\nJoncarl Lachman\, Winkel\nKiki Aranita\, Poi Dog\nLiz Grothe\, Scampi\nLor Kats\, Saami Somi\nMelissa McGrath\, Sweet Amalia\nOmar and Cybille Tate\, Honeysuckle Prov\nPat Alfiero\, Heavy Metal\nRebecca Foxman\, Fox & Sons \nBe sure to follow Pumpkin to see the chef line up each month\, the dishes they are creating\, and an adorable cabbage patch style illustration (they may need to make some swag using these images\, they are just that cute).

SUMMARY:The Angry Grammarian Musical
DESCRIPTION:Uncap your red pens again; The Angry Grammarian is back. \nAfter its sold-out world premiere run in March 2024\, The Angry Grammarian is returning. The world premiere production was Barrymore Recommended\, named one of the top things to do in Philly by Philadelphia Magazine and Visit Philly\, was raved about by The New Yorker\, and was even featured internationally on BBC World Service. \nAnd now\, by popular demand\, it’s coming back to Philadelphia in September 2024\, this time at the Arden Theatre’s Arcadia Stage. The new production will include new scenes\, new songs\, and old rules. Read more about the plot of this musical below: \nGreg is “The Angry Grammarian” – a newspaper columnist who’s passionate about predicates\, consumed by commas and seduced by subjunctives. Lisa is a more pragmatic grammarian who loves language just as much as he does. What starts as attraction quickly evolves into a darker rivalry. Will grammatical gusto be enough to keep them together? Enlivened by a love of language\, The Angry Grammarian is a new musical for anyone who’s ever been pissed off that someone used quotation marks “for emphasis.” \nThe Angry Grammarian is written by Jeffrey Barg and David Lee White\, and is inspired by Jeffrey Barg’s column “The Angry Grammarian” in The Philadelphia Inquirer. The production is directed by Dawn Navarro\, music directed by Pat D’Amato\, and produced by Pier Players Founder and Director Chelsea Cylinder. \nThe remounted production of this lively\, entertaining\, and grammatically correct musical will take place at the Arcadia Stage at the Arden Theatre in Old City. The show runs from September 20th-29th. \n$15.00 Industry and Student rush tickets will be available at the door.

SUMMARY:Abolition Histories: Tours and Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Delve into Philadelphia’s 18th and 19th century abolition movement through tours of Eden Cemetery and Laurel Hill East. On Saturday\, September 28\, learn about the lives of free African Americans and self-liberating abolitionists who now rest at Eden Cemetery\, such as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper\, William Still and Richard Allen\, and other activists whose stories of resistance are undertold. \nOn Sunday\, September 29\, explore the lives of people buried at Laurel Hill East\, including William Henry Furness\, George Bryan\, and Judge John Kane\, whose stances and stories ranged from solidarity to lives of contradiction to anti-abolition violence. \nBeyond individuals\, these tours illuminate the broader societal landscape of the time as well as the site histories of Laurel Hill and Eden\, which tell a story of racism in burial policies amongst cemeteries late into the 20th century and the African American response to a burial crisis. \nJoin us after the tours for a beginners’ collage workshop with Doriana Diaz\, an artist\, archivist\, and memory worker\, to explore images and ideologies of Black history and culture and collage as a form of resistance.

SUMMARY:Free Art Show- Rebecca Schultz- Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:For the month of September on view are works by Rebecca Schultz. Her showcase\, Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond explores in colorful depth the compositions under our feet and looming alongside us\, the local rock formations we overlook. There she finds poetry and history in recesses and outreaches. A beautiful statement is found through the fluidity of paint to represent the rigid structure of geology. In taking such a close examination of the quite strength we take for granted yet depend so much on\, Schultz asks us to appreciate the subtleties and learn more about ourselves. \nStop in the gallery 4 days a week to view and add to your collection. All works are also available for sale online through our site www.blackmothgallery.com. You will not want to miss out on experiencing these one of a kind works in person. \n10% of all proceeds will go to Friends of the Earth

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Premiere of Alabama Story by Kenneth Jones at The Old Academy Players
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — As part of its 2024-2025 Season\, The Old Academy Players is proud to present the Philadelphia Premiere of Alabama Story by American playwright (and Delaware County native) Kenneth Jones. The Old Academy Players’ 542nd production will run September 13-29\, 2024; with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and two Sunday matinees\, September 22nd and 29th at 2:00 pm. It is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc. \nAlabama Story was given its first major reading in May 2013 as part of the Southern Writers’ Project at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. After additional readings in Salt Lake City and New York City\, Alabama Story welcomed its world premiere at Pioneer Theatre Company\, Salt Lake City\, UT\, January 9–24\, 2015\, and received enthusiastic reviews. \n“…a crowd-pleasing and imaginatively theatrical comedy-drama…at a time when intolerance is on the upswing and empathy is under siege\, Alabama Story is just the play we need.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch. \n“Alabama Story explores thorny racial issues with smarts and sensitivity.” —DC Metro Weekly. \n“A disarmingly engaging drama…thoughtfully written…nuanced…well-layered…” —Atlanta Journal-Constitution. \nSynopsis: As the Civil Rights movement is brewing\, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist State Senator and a no-nonsense State Librarian in 1959 Montgomery\, Alabama. A contrasting story of childhood friends—an African American man and a woman of white privilege\, reunited in adulthood—provides private counterpoint to the public events swirling in the state capital. Political foes\, star-crossed lovers\, and one feisty children’s author inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor\, heartbreak\, and hope. Inspired by true events! \nThe stellar cast includes: Lorraine Barrett as Emily Wheelock Reed\, Clint Cleaver as Bobby Crone\, Nicole Gerenyi as Lily Whitfield\, Marc Johnson as Joshua Moore\, Mort Paterson as Senator E. W. Higgins\, Connor Patrick as Thomas Franklin\, Douglas Tague as Garth Williams\, Robert Toczek as Henry Branch/Passersby\, and Mike Zaleski as Hershel Webb. \nCarla Childs directs this Philadelphia Premiere of Alabama Story. The production team includes Vanessa Ballard\, Helga Krauss\, Alyssia Sims\, Sarah Swearer\, Karen Taylor-Young\, Dale Mezzacappa\, Judy Van Buskirk\, Mary Jane Fullam\, Renee Theis\, Mohammad Islam\, Phoenix Levine\, and Jesse Friedman. \nTicket prices are: $25 per adult; $15 for Students under 25 with valid ID; group rate (15 or more) $21 each. Tickets can be purchased online at www.OldAcademyPlayers.org. Reservations and more information can be obtained by calling the Box Office at 215-843-1109. Old Academy Players is located at 3544 Indian Queen Lane\, Philadelphia\, PA 19129. Parking for all performances is free. \nThe Old Academy Players has provided continuous community theater entertainment since 1923 and is a non-profit community theater in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. Constructed in 1819\, the Old Academy building has been the OAP home since 1932. Old Academy Players is a member of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. Most notable alumni include Tony Award-nominated actor Robert Prosky and Hollywood icon\, Grace Kelly. Support is provided by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.

SUMMARY:Hacia La Luz
DESCRIPTION:Hacia la luz is a dance journey into the many worlds I have inhabited. This work is the culmination of an intensive exploration into my Andean ancestry through extensive travels and studies with gifted Shamans coupled with my lifelong passion and commitment to my beloved flamenco. \nAfter I discovered several years ago that I was of 51% Andean indigenous descent\, I immersed myself in the spiritual teachings of Andean Shamanic medicine and rituals. While on this path\, I sought out healing modalities that allowed me to connect with the light and dark shadows that I have inherited. My spiritual interests and studies of Andean cosmology have led me to question the paradigms that governed my prevailing notions of reality\, identity\, creativity\, activism\, spirituality\, race\, gender\, class\, and sexuality. Through the lens of flamenco and my own dance modalities\, I hope that Hacia la luz will invite the audience to go on a journey of connection and healing\, and to look deeply at the dark shadows we have all inherited. Join me as we bear witness to what haunts us\, and we ask ourselves\, “How can we repair el daño (the damage)?”
