SUMMARY:Second Saturdays: Free House Tours
DESCRIPTION:Cliveden offers free house tours every second Saturday of the month\, May to October\, as part of their Second Saturday programming. \nHouse tours are available 12pm to 4pm\, beginning on the hour in the Cliveden Barn\, located at 98 E. Cliveden Street\, 19119. The last tour of the day is at 3pm. Each tour is a one-hour experience. Visitors will view our current exhibit\, The Turmoil of Transition: The mid-nineteenth century at Cliveden: \n‘Enter Cliveden as it was in the mid-nineteenth century – a household in turmoil and mourning over the death of husband and father\, Benjamin Chew\, Jr. This exhibit explores mourning practices\, household dynamics\, substance abuse and violence\, exacerbated by societal shifts of the mid-19th century and still relevant today.’ \nFor directions to Cliveden\, visit https://cliveden.org/visit/. DESCRIPTION:A Mt. Airy Learning Tree Winter Class \nLearn about famous artists from the 18th and 19th centuries including John Smibert\, John Wollaston and Germantown locals James Reid and George Cochran Lambdin while exploring the portraits at Cliveden. Participants will learn about the artists\, period painting styles and the people in the portraits and then have an opportunity to look at many of the paintings up close. The class fee is $25. Cliveden Street\, 19119. The Carriage House is best reached from Cliveden St.\, which is between Upsal and Johnson Streets. The Carriage House entrance is at the Morton St. end of Cliveden St.\, on the right side\, through a gate\, onto the grounds of Cliveden House.
