SUMMARY:Bards University
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Hum’n’bards Theater Troupe as part of 2025 Philly Theatre Week!\nBards University is an afternoon series of theatrical workshops on Saturday\, April 5th. Attendees can select specific workshops to attend\, or join us for all three! \nWorkshops are as follows:\n12:30-1:30pm – Unlocking Shakespeare with Ryan Walter\n2:00-3:00pm – Stage Manage With Me(lody)! with Melody Wong\n3:30-4:30pm – Getting Off-Book with CJ Higgins \n-Unlocking Shakespeare-\nIn this workshop we will be delving into the depths of the most human playwright to ever live. We will learn the applicable skills that are needed to decode and uncover the true meaning and drive behind Shakespeare’s poetry\, while also honoring the beauty and power that his language evokes. This language was never meant to be lofty and above us all\, quite the opposite in fact as it was always meant to be a public spectacle\, and with the right training anyone can make the Bard’s language their own. So let us work together to demystify Shakespeare and bring the humanity behind his scripts to life! \n-Stage Manage with Me(lody)!-\nIn this workshop Melody will provide the basic understanding of the role of stage management and knowledge in the practical skills to manage all aspects of theatrical production\, including coordinating rehearsals\, overseeing technical elements (lights\, sound\, props)\, being the liaison between the creative teams\, ensuring a smooth and safe execution of the performance\, & fostering a safe and creative room in the rehearsals and production process. \n-Getting Off-Book: A Workshop on Text Memorization-\nDo you struggle to get off-book? Do you want to learn and identify different memorization techniques and find the right one for your brain? Then this is the workshop for you! Philadelphia theatre artist CJ Higgins (they/he pronouns) will teach you the skills of learning new text\, exploring various memorization techniques and how they can be applied to script work. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll have a set of tools that can be used to get off-book for any text!

SUMMARY:The Wake: A Haunting Magic Experience
DESCRIPTION:“Unlike anything ever before” – Teller (of Penn & Teller). Using magic\, mind-reading\, and live music\, The Wake is a haunting\, immersive exploration of the space between life and death transporting guests beyond the veil. Perfect for Halloween season\, Philadelphia Magicians\, Musicians\, and Innovators Lindsey Noel\, Francis Menotti\, and Jon Gruver are bringing this spooky magical & musical theatrical immersive experience to Philadelphia’s SideQuest Theater for the month of October. Catch it hot off its invitational run at the 2024 Williamstown Theatre Festival as part of #WTFisNext\nMagic show? Seance? Concert? Play? Choose Your Own Adventure? Yes. Come experience The Wake for yourself – Tickets are limited per showing. \n*longer description*\nStraight from its successful invitational run at the legendary Williamstown Theatre Festival\, this haunting magical and musical immersive theatrical experience explores the space between life and death and invites all participants to sink into and revel in the unknown. Come along with the Director\, the Spiritualist\, and the Orator as you navigate the Deceased brain’s final firings. As electrical impulses continue beyond heart beats\, will anyone ever truly cross over or are we stuck in the seemingly eternal dream state of increasingly infinitesimal electric impulses? \nThe Wake\, a site specific immersive journey\, is inhabiting our space here at SideQuest Theater. Read below for a taste of what’s in store (or don’t – the choices start here)… \nYou step inside a theater in Center City Philadelphia. The stage is set in an unexpected fashion. The Director here at Daniel Graboli’s Funeral Practice greets you with the guest book and a funeral chip to mark your time at The Wake. Your evening celebrating the life of the lucky Deceased begins with beautiful music pouring from the Orator and filling the room. The Spiritualist may find you and offer you comfort or answers\, depending on what you seek in your time of need. \nThe veil slides back as the Ceremony begins and the sound of brooding accordion fills the room even more. You are compelled towards the sound only to be greeted by The Attendant\, whose aim is to elevate your experience with us here at Graboli’s. We begin as the Deceased is revealed to us all\, even themselves. Not an actor but a regular person – one just like you – only they are gifted this evening with the hope of transition from this realm into the next. \nMagic show? Seance? Concert? Play? Choose Your Own Adventure? Yes. \n“Unlike anything ever before!” – Teller (of Penn & Teller) \nCome experience The Wake for yourself.

SUMMARY:The Angry Grammarian Musical
DESCRIPTION:Uncap your red pens again; The Angry Grammarian is back. \nAfter its sold-out world premiere run in March 2024\, The Angry Grammarian is returning. The world premiere production was Barrymore Recommended\, named one of the top things to do in Philly by Philadelphia Magazine and Visit Philly\, was raved about by The New Yorker\, and was even featured internationally on BBC World Service. \nAnd now\, by popular demand\, it’s coming back to Philadelphia in September 2024\, this time at the Arden Theatre’s Arcadia Stage. The new production will include new scenes\, new songs\, and old rules. Read more about the plot of this musical below: \nGreg is “The Angry Grammarian” – a newspaper columnist who’s passionate about predicates\, consumed by commas and seduced by subjunctives. Lisa is a more pragmatic grammarian who loves language just as much as he does. What starts as attraction quickly evolves into a darker rivalry. Will grammatical gusto be enough to keep them together? Enlivened by a love of language\, The Angry Grammarian is a new musical for anyone who’s ever been pissed off that someone used quotation marks “for emphasis.” \nThe Angry Grammarian is written by Jeffrey Barg and David Lee White\, and is inspired by Jeffrey Barg’s column “The Angry Grammarian” in The Philadelphia Inquirer. The production is directed by Dawn Navarro\, music directed by Pat D’Amato\, and produced by Pier Players Founder and Director Chelsea Cylinder. \nThe remounted production of this lively\, entertaining\, and grammatically correct musical will take place at the Arcadia Stage at the Arden Theatre in Old City. The show runs from September 20th-29th. \n$15.00 Industry and Student rush tickets will be available at the door.
