SUMMARY:assimilating and Moving State 1
DESCRIPTION:Hiroaki Umeda’s choreography and eye for digital design have been celebrated throughout Europe\, Asia\, South America and the U.S.\nCritically acclaimed for his almost impossibly fluid movement style bordering on street dance – subtle\, radical\, and provocative – his dance pieces frequently synthesize ultramodern video\, dramatic lighting and crackling soundscapes as interlocking components interacting with moving bodies on stage. Now\, this slick avant-garde mastermind brings a double bill of his latest cutting-edge projects from Tokyo to Philadelphia. \nMoving State 1\, performed by four protege female dancers from Umeda’s Somatic Field Project who have fully absorbed his sleek\, oiled movements and assimilating\, Umeda’s signature solo performance\, operate within a dance aesthetic where refined physicality merges with cyberart. \nThe U.S. five-city tour of Hiroaki Umeda: assimilating and Moving State 1 is produced and organized by Japan Society\, with support from Arts Council Tokyo (Creation Grant) and The Harkness Foundation for Dance. \nPresented in association with the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia as part of the lead up to The 2026 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia. \n“Engaging…  Like a tin man with oil flowing freely through his veins…” — The New York Times\n\n\n“Cool\, minimalist\, high-tech hip-hop…” — Infinite Body\, Eva Yaa Asantewaa

SUMMARY:The Tapcracker
DESCRIPTION:This holiday season\, join The Lady Hoofers Tap Ensemble\, Philadelphia’s own all-women tap company\, for The Tapcracker! \nHailed as a “real delight” (ThINKing Dance)\, this all-tap version of the holiday favorite has “taken its rightful place among the Philadelphia holiday traditions on the Avenue of the Arts” (Broad Street Review). With a cast of over 40 dancers from PA\, NJ\, and DE\, The Tapcracker transports audiences to Paris\, where an infestation of rats has thrown the city into chaos: toy soldiers guard the Eiffel Tower\, mice wreak havoc in the Metro\, and Duke Ellington’s swinging rendition of the beloved Tchaikovsky score will leave you dancing in your seat.

SUMMARY:My Body Your Eyes - Philly Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:My Body Your Eyes \nRuns September 28\, 2025 at Old First Reformed Church\, 151 N 4th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106 \n  \nPHILADELPHIA\, PA: Western New York mulit-choreographer performance Your Eyes My Body comes to the historic Old First Reformed Church for one performance on Sunday\, September 28\, 2025 at 5:30 PM as part of the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Featuring Nancy Hughes\, M Neild\, Laura D’Amico\, and MahataMmoho Collective\, the work invites audiences into a shared exploration of resistance\, reverence and ritual. Doors open at 5:00 PM. \n“I have both a chip on my shoulder about Western New York and a deep passion for the work made here. Our dance community can be a mix of interludes and stories of betrayals\, but it’s also spacious and gives dance room to incubate in the inner world\, like snow covering in Buffalo\, NY. I’m excited for these choreographers to connect with a wider performance art community and expand our conversation.” – Nancy Hughes \nMY BODY YOUR EYES is a trove of duets and solos. “If she is the storm\, is she also the shelter” is a duet choreographed and performed by Nancy Hughes in collaboration with M Neild\, inspired by intimate hierarchical relationships. The solo “It’s only human / nature” is by M Neild. It explores the duality of humanity’s relationship with nature-both the reverent awe we hold for its beauty and power\, and the devastation we inflict upon it. Laura D’Amico has a new solo\, performed nude inside a transparent five-sided box\, drawn from her Fulbright research in Italy. A Community-rooted ritual by MahataMmoho Collective explores unity and collaboration performed by Arjumand Ali and his dance partner. \n  \nTickets to My Body Your Eyes are currently on sale by visiting fringearts.com. Admission is $15 with a sliding scale beginning at $5. More information on Center Mouvement can be found at www.centermouvement.com\, and via Facebook at www.facebook.com/centerdancebuffalo. Instagram @centerdanceny. \nService Details \nPresented by Nancy Hughes \nTitle:  My Body Your Eyes \nTime: September 28\, 2025\, at 5:30 pm \n Location: Old First Reformed Church\, 151 N 4th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106 \nTicket price: $5-$15 \nTickets available at fringearts.com \nProducer:  Center Mouvement LLC\, M Nield\, Laura D’Amico\, Megan Rakeepile & partially funded by George and Carolyn Kotlewski\, Sabra Jones\, Daniel Vekhter\, Sarah Welton-Lair and David Kapsiak

SUMMARY:Storyville: Bumpa by Kayla Naomi Watkins
DESCRIPTION:This documentary will explore the Afro-Caribbean dance\, ‘whining’ alongside the practice of twerking to analyze respectability politics\, pressures to accommodate whiteness\, and gendered criticism of sexual expression within the Black diaspora. Using archival footage of West African dance\, expert opinion from dancing and gender studies professors\, and the active participation of partygoers in a dance experiment\, I will paint the picture of the defiance\, autonomy\, and ancestral veneration intrinsic to these traditional movement styles. \nKayla Naomi Watkins is a Baltimorean Trinidadian Documentarian based in Philly with a focus in media education and documentary production. Watkins’ work covers issues that impact Black\, brown\, working-class\, and femme communities.

SUMMARY:The Tapcracker
DESCRIPTION:This holiday season\, join The Lady Hoofers Tap Ensemble for their signature production of The Tapcracker at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre on Saturday\, December 14\, and Sunday\, December 15. \nHailed as a “real delight” (ThINKingDance)\, this all-tap version of the holiday favorite has “taken its rightful place among the Philadelphia holiday traditions on the Avenue of the Arts” (Broad Street Review).
