SUMMARY:PARK It!
DESCRIPTION:Let’s design our own pop-up parklet that can fit in a PARK(ing) spot for the worldwide celebration of PARK(ing) DAY. Walk away with sketches and a hand-built scale model. \nWhat is it? The number of parks throughout Philadelphia increases dramatically each year on the third Friday in September\, when activists\, artists\, architects\, and other citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks. Known as PARKing) Day\, this annual event re-imagines the possibilities of 140 square feet of public space. The event is a global\, public\, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer\, greener\, and more equitable streets for people. \nHow did it start? PARK(ing) Day was founded by Rebar\, a San Francisco art and design studio\, in 2005 to raise awareness of the need for green spaces in urban environments. Philadelphia celebrated PARK(ing) Day for the first time in 2008 with over 25 installations for relaxing\, cycling\, creating art\, education\, and socializing.

SUMMARY:Bards University
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Hum’n’bards Theater Troupe as part of 2025 Philly Theatre Week!\nBards University is an afternoon series of theatrical workshops on Saturday\, April 5th. Attendees can select specific workshops to attend\, or join us for all three! \nWorkshops are as follows:\n12:30-1:30pm – Unlocking Shakespeare with Ryan Walter\n2:00-3:00pm – Stage Manage With Me(lody)! with Melody Wong\n3:30-4:30pm – Getting Off-Book with CJ Higgins \n-Unlocking Shakespeare-\nIn this workshop we will be delving into the depths of the most human playwright to ever live. We will learn the applicable skills that are needed to decode and uncover the true meaning and drive behind Shakespeare’s poetry\, while also honoring the beauty and power that his language evokes. This language was never meant to be lofty and above us all\, quite the opposite in fact as it was always meant to be a public spectacle\, and with the right training anyone can make the Bard’s language their own. So let us work together to demystify Shakespeare and bring the humanity behind his scripts to life! \n-Stage Manage with Me(lody)!-\nIn this workshop Melody will provide the basic understanding of the role of stage management and knowledge in the practical skills to manage all aspects of theatrical production\, including coordinating rehearsals\, overseeing technical elements (lights\, sound\, props)\, being the liaison between the creative teams\, ensuring a smooth and safe execution of the performance\, & fostering a safe and creative room in the rehearsals and production process. \n-Getting Off-Book: A Workshop on Text Memorization-\nDo you struggle to get off-book? Do you want to learn and identify different memorization techniques and find the right one for your brain? Then this is the workshop for you! Philadelphia theatre artist CJ Higgins (they/he pronouns) will teach you the skills of learning new text\, exploring various memorization techniques and how they can be applied to script work. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll have a set of tools that can be used to get off-book for any text!

SUMMARY:Across Ten Thousand Mountains 万重山 | Jing Huang Ceramic Artist
DESCRIPTION:Across Ten Thousand Mountains\nJing Huang\, ceramic artist\nOctober 3 – November 21\, 2024\nGravers Lane Gallery\, Philadelphia\, PA \nAcross Ten Thousand Mountains\n万重山 \nGravers Lane Gallery is pleased to present “Across Ten Thousand Mountains”\, ceramic artist Jing Huang’s first solo exhibition at Gravers Lane Gallery. The first of two receptions will take place on October 4th\, 5pm-8pm. Please join Jing Huang’s opening night presentation at 6:30pm. The second reception will take place November 1st\, 5pm-8pm and the exhibition closes on November 21st 2024. \n“Across Ten Thousand Mountains” is an exploration of nature\, migration\, identity\, memory\, and home. Born and raised in the small mountainous city of Guilin (桂林) in southern China\, Jing Huang brought her art practice to Canada in 2013 and later to the U.S. in 2018. Amid the dislocation and ambiguity of being neither here nor there\, Jing anchors herself by tracing her past and drawing inspiration from early memories of her background and hometown’s landscape after a long absence. Her ceramic forms explore the unknown scenery between her past and present\, reflecting the flow of landscape and atmosphere in changing environments. These works embody the nature of her diasporic experience\, living and moving among different cultures and languages. They transcend mere representation of her hometown or any specific location; rather\, they seek a deeper understanding of her identity and experience in the world.

SUMMARY:Ravel by Krista Dedrick-Lai - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by Philadelphia-based artist Krista Dedrick-Lai. \nFebruary 10 – March 23\, 2024 \nRavel is an interesting word. A contranym. It can be both a noun and a verb. It can mean both tangle and untangle. And isn’t that how life can be sometimes? We find ourselves in a great big mess. And the more we try to tease the mess apart and get everything back in order\, the more jumbled it becomes. In the end there is no reweaving the unraveled tapestry\, not really. There is simply taking the threads you have at your feet and starting again.
