SUMMARY:Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. To learn more\, visit freelibrary.org/specialcollections and freelibrary.org/gpd. \nThis exhibition can be viewed in the Second Floor West Gallery of Parkway Central Library from May 2\, 2026 through January 2\, 2027.

The Chew House will be open for self-guided walkthroughs of the art installations throughout the house and grounds. Visitors are encouraged to view these incredible pieces before our tour season closes on November 22nd. \nAbout Looking Glass\nLooking Glass is a site-responsive exhibition of works by six contemporary artists: Naya Lee Chang\, Janna Gregonis\, Jacintha Kruc\, Kristen Neville Taylor\, Jonathan Wahl\, and Samara Weaver. Sited within the historic interiors and grounds of Cliveden\, the project reflects on the history of people and place in commemoration of the U.S. Semi-quincentennial. \nThe exhibition is organized by Past Present Projects in partnership with Cliveden of the National Trust. Looking Glass is part of Radical Americana\, a city-wide series of exhibitions organized by The Clay Studio\, with support from Philly250 and ArtPhilly.  https://cliveden.org/radical-americana-exhibition/ \nAbout Radical Americana\nFor the Semiquincentennial\, The Clay Studio is leading Radical Americana\, a series of exhibitions organized by a consortium of Philadelphia’s arts and cultural institutions. Each celebrates how artists today are continuing the city’s robust legacy as a center for art\, skill\, and civic engagement. The 45 artists researched and were inspired by the art and history of Philadelphia in 1776\, and the subsequent commemorations in 1876\, 1926\, and 1976. The artists’ new work will add their voices to current dialogue about our nation’s present and future\, inspire civil dialogue\, celebrate Philadelphia’s diversity\, and continue the rich tradition of creativity in our city.  https://www.theclaystudio.org/exhibitions/radical-americana
