SUMMARY:Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. Perhaps you have a wish for your own future. \nVisit our wish wall\, located in the 2nd Floor West Gallery\, and write or draw your vision for our nation’s future. Your wish will then be added to the wall to encourage further discussion\, and to display the diversity of lived experiences\, stories\, and desires of our community. \nThe Free Library encourages patrons to make their voice heard and delve deeper into civic engagement. By advancing literacy\, guiding learning\, and inspiring curiosity\, the Free Library of Philadelphia can provide avenues for patrons to work towards making their wishes into reality. \nThis program is a part of the exhibition celebrating America’s 250th\, Philadelphia: For the People\, which will be on display from May 2026 – January 2027 in the 2nd Floor West Gallery of the Parkway Central Library.
