SUMMARY:Teachers Gone Bad
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Mind Twist Comedy\, Teachers Gone Bad showcases a killer lineup of educators-turned-comedians. Whether they’re moonlighting between grading papers or crushing it full-time on the comedy circuit\, these performers bring schoolyard absurdity and adult chaos together on stage. \nAnd no\, this is not kid-friendly. \nExpect brutally funny tales of embarrassing classroom moments\, school politics\, and staff room drama. But it doesn’t stop there—we go deep into the hilarious truths of family\, marriage\, parenthood\, and life itself. Nearly every Teachers Gone Bad show has been sold out—teachers show up for one reason: to hear the jokes they wish they could say out loud on campus. With former teachers leading the charge\, it’s a full-on catharsis\, no punches pulled\, and absolutely NO FEAR of HR. Because\, honestly\, what are they going to do? Fire us twice? \nIf you’re ready for a night of unapologetic\, unfiltered\, and downright wicked comedy\, Teachers Gone Bad is the show you didn’t know you needed!

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Tolkien’s Fight Against Futurism
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Tolkien’s Fight Against Futurism\,” a look at a beloved fantasy author as fundamentally engaged in a battle to preserve beauty\, with Graham McAleer\, professor of philosophy at Loyola University Maryland and teacher of a course on the morals and politics of Lord of the Rings. \nAs a young man in the early 20th century J.R.R. Tolkien watched an avant-garde art form known as Futurism become all the rage. Shaped by industrialization and by admiration for new machinery\, Futurism celebrated speed\, acceleration\, and the whirl of technical innovation\, earning it another name\, Vorticism\, in Tolkien’s England. \nAlthough remembered mainly as a writer\, Tolkien also was an accomplished pen-and-ink artist who kept abreast of the art movements of his time. He developed a distaste for Futurism and what it signified that only grew stronger as he experienced the horrors of modern warfare as a soldier at the 1916 Battle of the Somme. He regarded what Futurism celebrated as “the Machine\,” representing fascist politics and apocalyptic war\, and his opposition to it deeply influenced not just his art but his written works. \nGain insights into how Tolkien’s sensibilities as a visual artist shaped his worldview and writing with Graham McAleer\, a scholar of philosophy who has closely studied Tolkien’s work. \nProfessor McAleer will look at how Tolkien’s lore can be seen as one long meditation on beauty and its problematic twin\, vanity\, with what separated them most in Tolkien’s mind being their respective approaches to time: Beauty is patient\, vanity is not. \nWe’ll look at Tolkien’s argument that that impatience mars beauty and corrupts our standing in a cosmos\, and we’ll consider his characterization of his own work as “cosmogonical drama” dealing with the universe’s origins. You’ll learn how his tales of Dark Lords squaring off against elven queens and genial Hobbits reflect his view that war is always a dispute about beauty. \nYou’ll come to see Tolkien as having grappled with a profound philosophical question that dates back to Plato\, and you’ll emerge from the talk with a much deeper understanding and appreciation of Tolkien’s works. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: A bust of Tolkien at Oxford. SUMMARY:Poetry is for Everyone Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We get it: it can be daunting to dip your toes into poetry. You may not be sure where to start. That’s why H&H Books started a new book club: Poetry is for Everyone. \nOur next meeting is Saturday\, November 22 at 2 PM at Valerio Coffee Roasters (2331 Frankford Avenue). We’ll discuss War of the Foxes by Richard Siken. Here’s a little bit about the book: \n“Siken’s stark\, startling collection focuses tightly on both the futility and the importance of creating art.”–Booklist \n“Poems primarily about painting and representation give way to images that become central characters in a sequence of fable-like pieces. Animals\, landscapes\, objects\, and an array of characters serve as sites for big\, human questions to play out in distilled form. Siken’s sense of line has become more uniform\, this steadiness punctuated by moments of cinematic urgency.”–Publishers Weekly \n“In this much-anticipated second book\, Richard Siken seeks definite answers to indefinite questions: what it means to be called to make-whether it is a self\, love\, war\, or art-and what it means to answer that call. In poems equal parts contradiction and clarity\, logic and dream\, Siken tells the modern world an unforgettable fable about itself.” \nParticipants are highly encouraged to read the book before the meeting in order to participate fully. H&H staffer Kristen will ask questions & facilitate discussion\, and participants will share their thoughts and impressions of the month’s selection. SUMMARY:HIAS Pennsylvania's Thankful Together
DESCRIPTION:Our Tradition: Every year HIAS PA helps our newest arrivals celebrate their first Thanksgiving by inviting them to a meal prepared and served by our volunteers. Together we break bread\, teach the newcomers about this uniquely American holiday and celebrate being together. \nThe Problem: This year\, newcomers are under attack by our own government and cannot come to celebrate this traditional holiday without exposing themselves to significant danger. So this year\, we are expressing our thanks for all of you by sharing an afternoon of information and advocacy. \nOur Solution (which depends on all of you): HIAS PA staff will share their expertise to teach us the truth about the American Immigration system – why it is so broken and how the current federal government is using it as a weapon to attack our community members. They will answer questions that you have about the system and\, most importantly\, share things you can do to help ensure Liberty and Justice for All!

SUMMARY:H & H Books November Writing Group
DESCRIPTION:H&H’s writing group is open to writers in any genre and at any level–whether you’ve published several books or are just starting to write. We get that with so much going on\, it can be hard to find time to write. We also know that community is the best way we can show up for each other and hold ourselves accountable to our writing. If you have writer’s block\, don’t let that stop you from coming! H&H staffer Kristen will provide writing prompts. \nDuring this session\, we’ll gather at Valerio Coffee Roasters in Fishtown at 2:00-3:30pm on Sunday. Nov. 23. \nRegistration is highly recommended!
