DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the relationships and stories we most need to write about will resist letting themselves be put into words. We start to write and fail\, or we stare at a blank page—not because we have too little to say\, but maybe because our hearts are too full and no words seem like they could be enough. Experimenting with formal constraints to our writing can provide a container that holds what needs to be said\, so that it can pour itself onto the page. \nIn this workshop\, we will explore form in poetry and prose to invite difficult relationships to the page. Beginning from a short discussion of a piece of their own work that helped them to write into family relationships\, Chad Frame and Catharina Coenen will guide writers to experiment with form in prose and poetry to create space for needed words.

Co-directors Alexis Neophytides and Andres “Jay” Molina uncover a history of institutional neglect and abandonment\, where Jay lives along with his fellow Reality Poets\, a group of residents mostly gun violence survivors. Wearing snapback caps and Air Jordans\, Jay and the other Reality Poets don’t look like typical nursing home residents. They used to travel around the city sharing their art and hard-earned wisdom with youth. Now\, using GoPros clamped to their wheelchairs\, they document their experiences on “lockdown.” \nAlexis Neophytides is a documentary filmmaker and educator whose work centers around community and how we find meaning in people and place. She is the co-creator\, co-director\, and producer of Neighborhood Slice\, a public television documentary series that tells the stories of longtime New Yorkers who’ve held onto their little corner of the city despite fast-growing gentrification. DESCRIPTION:Art Battle Philadelphia is a live painting competition featuring 12 local artists who each have 20 minutes to create a piece of art from start to finish. The audience votes after each round to determine which artists advance and who wins. In between rounds\, there are spoken word and poetry performances. The event takes place at SPIN Philadelphia and includes a silent auction where attendees can bid on the artwork created during the night. It’s an event that brings together live art\, community\, and creativity in one space.

DESCRIPTION:Ghetto Children by Zac Manuel \n(USA\, 2024\, 104 min) \nIn the late 90s and early 2000s\, New Orleans rappers Juvenile\, B.G.\, and Soulja Slim put the city in the national music spotlight as the indomitable voices of Black\, street culture in the housing projects. Now their sons: Young Juve\, T.Y.\, and Lil Soulja Slim have decided to embark on careers as rap musicians\, connected by their shared legacies\, the film follows their artistic pursuits and maturity. Ghetto Children is an immersive documentary told through a combination of intimate verité cinematography and archival footage depicting the highs and lows of their fathers’ lives amidst the rapid transition of the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. \n\nZac Manuel is a director and cinematographer from New Orleans\, Louisiana.
