SUMMARY:Conversation + Book Launch with Tiffany E. Barber
DESCRIPTION:Join The Print Center to celebrate Tiffany E. Barber’s new publication\, Undesirability and Her Sisters: Black Women’s Visual Work and the Ethics of Representation\, published by New York University Press. Barber will discuss the inspiration behind the project and tell us more about the book. This event will be presented both in-person and on Zoom\, and is free and open to the public. \nIn the wake of contemporary art’s post-Black turn and the mainstreaming of intersectionality\, Undesirability and Her Sisters charts a new genealogy of Black women’s art that exposes the unfinished project of racial and gender empowerment in the twenty-first century. Tiffany Barber argues that Black women’s social positions at the intersection of race\, gender\, sexuality and class are inherently queer\, thus spurring unexpected aesthetic strategies that throw into high relief the ethical terrain of what it means to be Black and a woman now.

SUMMARY:What’s What Productions presents 2 Women\, 2 Mothers at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA: After a successful premiere in Toronto and the Bay Area\, What’s What Productions is proud to bring 2 Women\, 2 Mothers to the 2025 Fringe Festival at the Louis Bluver Theater at the Drake\, (302 S Hicks Street\, Philadelphia) running for a limited engagement on Sept 19 at 6:30 PM and September 20 at 4:45 PM \nThese 2 back-to-back solo shows featuring Vicki Dello Joio and Merry Ross\, explore the transformative nature of mother-daughter relationships — what it means to be a daughter and a mother (and sometimes both at the same time) with a little bit of “What the f**k!?” \n“After performing their last successful and award-winning show\, 2 Women\, 2 Stories at several Fringe Festivals around the country\, Vicki and Merry are super excited to join Philadelphia Fringe with their new show\, especially because it is Merry’s home town!” What’s What Productions \nIn It’s About Time\, Vicki navigates the challenging end-of-life journey she travels with her mother\, while celebrating and exploring the complex dynamics of their relationship. As Vicki transitions from daughter to mothering her own mother\, she finds the humor and sorrow in letting go with humor and heart\, using her expertise as a brilliant physical and character actor to tell stories of their relationship and that final passage. \nTherapy Fund is a comic and poignant exploration of her relationships with both Merry’s two daughters and her mother and grandmother. With consummate skill and expertise\, Merry walks the line between stand-up comedy and self-revelatory performance to look at how inter-generational trauma can be addressed and healed\, when one is committed to doing it differently and laughing at her own mistakes and foibles along the way. \nWhat’s What Productions has recently presented this show in Toronto and the Bay Area to  full houses and standing ovations \nWhat’s What Productions presents \n2 Women\, 2 Mothers \nSeptember 19 -20\, 2025 \nLouis Bluver Theater at the Drake\, (302 S Hicks Street\, Philadelphia) \n$25 \nTickets available at https://phillyfringe.org/events/2-women-2-mothers/. \n

SUMMARY:Sympathy Towards a Soldier: The Music and Death of Major John André
DESCRIPTION:SYMPATHY TOWARDS A SOLDIER: \nThe Music and Death of Major John André \nFriday\, Sept 19th at 7pm \nGloria Dei\, Old Swedes’ Church • 916 S Swanson St\, Philadelphia PA 19147 \nTickets: $30 general\, $15 student with ID \nDuring the British occupation of Philadelphia\, Major John André was a favorite among tory young ladies and well loved by his peers. An accomplished flutist and artist\, Major André organized the opulent Meschianza celebration for General Wm Howe that scandalized the city’s beleaguered citizens. The celebration included music on barges in the Delaware\, a joust\, feasting and a candlelit ball. Within two years of the Meschianza\, Major André was arrested for espionage in league with Benedict Arnold. Fearing an ignominious death by hanging\, Major André begged General Washington to have “sympathy towards a soldier” and grant him death by firing squad. In this concert we’ll explore the musical life and ungentlemanly death of this “man of honor” with readings from contemporary letters\, diaries and newspapers\, and music of the British occupation. Music of James Oswald\, Carl Friedrich Abel\, JC Bach\, James Hewitt\, John André\, traditional ballads and dances as danced by the British Army during their occupation of Philadelphia in 1777-78. Music performed on period instruments\, in the interpretive style of the 18th c. \nWith Anika Kildegaard\, voice; Francis Liu\, violin;  Eve Miller\, cello; John Walthausen\, harpsichord; and & Steven Zohn\, flute

SUMMARY:Klorkhana: The Tyrant World Premiere of a Science Fiction Opera about a Tyrant who takes over a planet
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — “Klorkhana: The Tyrant\,” will be presented in full in a concert setting.  Both book and music are written by Kate Quinn. \nKlorkhana is the official Mind Healer of the planet of Sephro but instead of healing minds\, he corrupts them.  He projects false love into people in exchange for stealing their energies for his own use.  His favorite thing to do is rob women of their special spiritual essences that help heal minds and bodies in ways men can’t duplicate.  Klorkhana and many men of Sephro are envious of women for having certain gifts men don’t possess.  Instead of appreciating what they have\, they want what they don’t have\, at any cost.  Klorkhana soon has almost every man on planet Sephro following him\, particularly one susceptable young man named Aulio.  Together\, he and Klorkhana are determined to steal what women have\, and use it for themselves. \nOnly Coran\, Warrior Overseer and Security Chief of the entire planet\, her mate Tanna and Klorkhana’s former mate Destylla are able to form an army to stop this tyrant.  No matter what the outcome\, these rebels are determined to bring Planet Sephro back to its former glory. \nThe opera concert will take place with the Philly Fringe on Thursday and Friday\, September 18 & 19\, 2025 at 7:00 pm at The Rotunda\, 4014 Walnut Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104. \nAdmission:  Pay what you can (PWYC) Options \nDuration: Opera – approximately 1 hour in length plus a Talk Back Q & A session (1 hr) after the opera \nThis event is part of the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. \nClick https://phillyfringe.org/events/klorkhana-the-tyrant/ for more info or to RSVP. \n

The play opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on November 4\, 1981\, and closed on February 13\, 1983\, after 535 performances and 13 previews. \nCrimes of the Heart won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, the 1981 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play\, and a nomination for a Tony Award. Henley’s screenplay for Crimes of the Heart was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. \nReviews indicated: \n“While this play overflows with infectious high spirits\, it is also\, unmistakably\, the tale of a very troubled family. Such is Miss Henley’s prodigious talent that she can serve us pain as though it were a piece of cake.” —The New York Times. \n“It has heart\, wit and a surprisingly zany passion that must carry all before it…it would certainly be a crime for anyone interested in the theatre not to see this play.” —New York Post \n“From time to time a play comes along that restores one’s faith in our theatre…” —New York Magazine. \nSynopsis: The tragicomedy relates the story of the three Magrath sisters\, Meg\, Babe\, and Lenny\, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazelhurst\, Mississippi\, after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. SUMMARY:Old Academy Players presents Disenchanted!
DESCRIPTION:Disenchanted! By Dennis T. Giacino\nDirected by Annie Hnatko \nApril 25th\, 26th; May 2nd\, 3rd\, 4th\, 9th\, 10th\, 11th\, 2025\nFriday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.\, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. \nPoison apples and lost slippers are just the beginning. The original storybook heroines are none-too-happy with the way they’ve been portrayed in today’s pop culture\, so they’ve tossed their tiaras and have come to life to set the record straight. Forget the princesses you think you know — these royal renegades are here to comically belt out the truth. Received an “Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Outer Critics Circle Awards) and a “Best New Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Off-Broadway Alliance). \nContent Warning: Contains adult language and content.

There are literally countless opportunities throughout our day for training our mind and stabilizing the good intentions of our meditation practice. \nIn this half-day course learn practical methods to increase the energy of our meditation practice and improve our concentration. \nThis course will be taught by Resident Teacher John Baker.  John Baker is the Resident Teacher at Kadampa Meditation Center Philadelphia. Having been a student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche for over 25 years\, he is well-qualified to pass along modern Buddhism. John has engaged in extensive Dharma study and retreat. He teaches in a gentle and practical way with an emphasis on transforming the experiences of everyday life through meditation practice.
