DESCRIPTION:Over the next month\, Philadelphia-based non-profit Meantime\, in collaboration with Atelier Prajje Oscar and the Northern Liberties Business Improvement District\, will curate a storefront pop-up featuring local and Haitian-owned fashion brands at 806 N Second Street in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood. The storefront will be open to the public Thursday through Sunday afternoons and evenings. A full schedule is available on Instagram at @prajjeoscar or @meantimephl\, and will be updated with additional information throughout the month. \nBlending high fashion\, culture\, and community\, this luxury shopping pop-up has been curated by Prajje Oscar Jean-Baptiste and offers a unique shopping destination within an immersive holiday atmosphere. Fashion\, art and objects are featured from Prajje Oscar collection\, SheWorkz\, COPA Soaps\, Callo Skin Bar\, Kadokele Jewelry\, and Boutique Boivert. The pop-up boutique’s mission is to uplift local and Haitian businesses while providing luxurious and accessible products to the community. \nMeantime is committed to activating underutilized commercial spaces in an effort to enliven street-life\, creative production\, and entrepreneurship opportunities for local communities. Since 2022\, the Philadelphia-based non-profit has curated several building and storefront activations that have included vendor markets\, workshops\, music\, cinema\, store pilots\, and art installations. \nMeantime was inspired by the work and thinking of the Philadelphia-based architectural firm ISA. Meantime is led by Brian Phillips\, Deb Katz\, Kristin DeMarco and Jiray Avedisian. \nThis Meantime activation is supported by the City of Philadelphia Commerce Department\, and The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation. Jazzy Jeff\, these covers visualize the diverse cultural landscape of Black Pennsylvanian achievement while underscoring the intergenerational importance of these unique contributions as nothing less than iconic. \nJet Magazine emerged in 1951 by Johnson’s Publishing as a leading platform for transmitting news coverage to the Black community. From politics and business to sports and entertainment\, Jet was an inspirational source centering and celebrating Black people\, events\, and achievements.  Its digest-size format was often referred to as the “Negro Bible.” \nThis exhibition will also feature a new series where Rucker reimagines Wheaties Box covers that center Negro- League Baseball achievement and the unique history of Black Baseball in Pennsylvania. With one of the most iconic slogans in sports marketing history\, Wheaties – the Breakfast of Champions\, captured the “All-American athlete” on its cereal boxes since 1934. Serving as a symbol of recognition for outstanding athletic achievement\, some of the most iconic Olympians\, sports teams\, and individual athletes adorned Wheaties cereal box covers. Rucker includes teams such as the Homestead Grays and the Philadelphia Stars and players like Josh Gibson and Roberto Clemente\, visually narrating them as ancestral heroes and true champions of the American sports story. \nJet and Wheaties dynamically utilized simplistic design to transform how society digested cultural iconography. Rucker focuses on this impact to shift focus and symbolize how Black Pennsylvanians contributed to the American cultural landscape. \n“Shaheed Rucker: (re)Covering the Iconic” will open on December 20\, 2024\, in the Jack T.
