SUMMARY:Journey Arts' Table Sessions: Kristal Sotomayor
DESCRIPTION:Journey Arts’ beloved Table Sessions returns in April\, curated by award-winning filmmaker Kristal Sotomayor. Prime yourself for an ebullient evening with the boisterous sounds of the kumbia-klezmer-punk collective Mariposas Galácticas\, whose music is inspired by their Ancestor’s shared roots in “radical joy.” \nThen sit forward for a screening of Kristal’s short film Expanding Sanctuary  — the winner of the 2024 BlackStar Philadelphia Filmmaker Award — which flips the script on the current moment by telling the story of an immigrant mother’s triumphant fight for safety for Philly families. \nAnd\, of course\, leave filled not only with joy\, but with a delicious dinner by the James Beard Award-winning Chef Cristina Martínez of South Philly Barbacoa.

SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. SUMMARY:Edgar Allan Poe's LIGEIA Reimagined through Physical Theatre at Cannonball Festival
DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PA: LIGEIA by Edgar Allan Poe will be presented in the Cannonball Festival\, part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival\, at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St). This intimate physical theatre adaptation of the gothic masterpiece will run September 16-19. \nObsession for the lost LIGEIA spirals into madness in Poe’s haunting tale of unutterable grief and unimaginable terror. As chilling evidence of a supernatural presence mounts\, the audience wonders: are the narrator’s visions caused by opium\, or has his wife’s corpse been possessed? \nRather than dramatizing the events of the plot\, LIGEIA emphasizes the physical action of storytelling itself. Remaining faithful to Poe’s original text\, solo-performer William Trevino weaves poetic language with his decades of martial arts practice to create a visceral atmosphere of suspense. A 6th degree black belt in Soo Bahk Do and a veteran Poe performer\, Trevino transforms martial arts movement to embody the psychological struggles of Poe’s narrator. \n“I think of Poe’s language as a complex musical score\,” says Trevino. “My martial arts choreography doesn’t illustrate the story\, it dances to it.” \nWilliam Trevino’s work devising theatre from martial arts has been presented in NYC (including at Dixon Place and HERE Arts Center) with support from the Jerome Foundation and the Queens Arts Fund. His Poe performances have ranged from presenting The Tell-Tale Heart at the Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum in Baltimore\, to hosting the television series Gothic Tales on Manhattan Neighborhood Network/MNN. \nLIGEIA by Edgar Allan Poe will be presented on September 16 (9:00 PM)\, 17 (6:00 PM)\, and 19 (3:30 PM) at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19107) as part of Cannonball\, a presenting hub of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. General Admission is $25\, with PWYC (pay what you can) tickets available. SUMMARY:Offstage Onstage: Everything You Didn’t See The Greeks Do
DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PA: Offstage Onstage: Everything You Didn’t See The Greeks Do will be presented at Cannonball Festival at Asian Arts Initiative Black Box Theater (1219 Vine St) for five performances only.  \nFor the first time ever at Haverford Middle School\, three students interrogate all of the action that traditionally took place offstage in Ancient Greek tragedy: Oedipus stabbing his eyes out after hearing the truth that he murdered his father and married his mother\, Medea killing her children to get revenge on her husband Jason\, and the women of Thebes tearing Pentheus apart after being driven mad by Dionysus. The young theatre historians hop in and out of the different characters and stories of the Greeks to win the praise of their English teacher–Mr. Moscow. As they delve deeper and deeper into exploring these unthinkable acts\, however\, they confront the challenges of their own lives in and outside of school – fashion malfunctions\, bullying\, and\, at its worst\, the fear of gun violence. True to the little ghost party form\, much of the play is performed on a tiny stage. \nIf Pen15 and The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) had a baby about Greek tragedy.
