SUMMARY:Bon Appétit! - comic opera about Julia Child - supports building restoration project
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia’s historic Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion (LCHC)\, under the pastorate of The Rev. Teresa ‘Terri’ McNamara\, is marking its 150th anniversary this year. Please join church members “Celebrating God’s Welcome” for the fourth event of the sesquicentennial supporting the building restoration fund on Saturday\, March 14\, 2026 at 4:00 pm as Aurora Classical presents Bon Appétit! by special arrangement with G. Schirmer\, Inc.* \nBon Appétit! was composed by Lee Hoiby with libretto after Julia Child and adapted by Mark Shulgasser. “Two episodes of [The French Chef] the second WGBH-TV season were conflated: the race between the whisk and the electric beater comes out of a different cake. Props have been used\, or not. Hoiby’s music deftly veers around Broadway chansons\, early television\, and Ravelian apotheosis to underline Julia Child’s compelling domestic uplift.” – Mark Shulgasser \nHaving studied with composer Gian Carlo Menotti at the Curtis Institute of Music\, Hoiby composed Bon Appétit! in 1985 for American actress and friend Jean Stapleton\, best known as the off-key singing Edith Bunker on TV’s All in the Family. (Little did the television audience know that Stapleton was a classically trained singer.) Stapleton sang the 1989 premiere at The Kennedy Center with Hoiby conducting a chamber ensemble and later performed Bon Appétit! in an off-Broadway run. \nBon Appétit! is a 25-minute comic opera after which a sample of Julia Child’s flourless chocolate cake and coffee will be served. Aurora Classical’s Contralto Susan Weinman portrays Julia Child with piano accompaniment provided by the gifted Julia Hanna.  “It’s hysterical\,” says Weinman\, “although this production’s version of Julia is no more the real Julia than Dan Akroyd’s portrayal\, she is more like a half-baked (pun intended) cousin and not at all meant to be a true depiction of this great lady.  The recipe for ”Le Gâteau au Chocolat l’Éminence Brune” is indeed Julia’s.  We offer it in the spirit of the lady\, made by servantless American cooks.” \nPurchase tickets ($25 per person) online at https://secure.myvanco.com/L-Z43S/campaign/C-1264X and put “Bon Appetit!” in the note line. \nReserve tickets at 215-567-3668 or email info@lc-hc.org. Thank you in advance for your donation to the building restoration fund. Donors’ names will be listed at the door. \nTo read the history of Philadelphia’s Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion [2110 Chestnut Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19103-4405]\, visit https://www.lc-hc.org/history. \n* Bon Appétit! \nMusic by Lee Hoiby \nText by Julia Child\, adapted by Mark Shulgasser \nPresented under license from G. Schirmer\, Inc.\, copyright owners.

SUMMARY:Brew N' History Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the graves of some icons while pairing their legacies with Yards Brewery. See how 18th-century drink culture fueled a new Republic. \nStep back in time—and raise a glass—to the stories that built a nation. \nPhiladelphia isn’t just the cradle of American Liberty; it was a brewing capital of the New World. From the first commercial vineyards to the smoky taverns where revolution was whispered\, alcohol has flowed through the veins of the city since the 1680s. \nJoin us at the historic Christ Church Burial Ground for a walking tour that uncovers the “spirited” side of some iconic figures. We’re pulling on the threads of Founding Fathers\, doctors\, writers\, and artists who used beer\, cider\, and wine to fuel a new society. \nThe Experience\nAs we navigate the final resting places of 4\,000 Philadelphians\, we will pair the legacies of the city’s most influential figures with samples of signature brews from Yards Brewing Company. SUMMARY:assimilating and Moving State 1
DESCRIPTION:Hiroaki Umeda’s choreography and eye for digital design have been celebrated throughout Europe\, Asia\, South America and the U.S.\nCritically acclaimed for his almost impossibly fluid movement style bordering on street dance – subtle\, radical\, and provocative – his dance pieces frequently synthesize ultramodern video\, dramatic lighting and crackling soundscapes as interlocking components interacting with moving bodies on stage. Now\, this slick avant-garde mastermind brings a double bill of his latest cutting-edge projects from Tokyo to Philadelphia. \nMoving State 1\, performed by four protege female dancers from Umeda’s Somatic Field Project who have fully absorbed his sleek\, oiled movements and assimilating\, Umeda’s signature solo performance\, operate within a dance aesthetic where refined physicality merges with cyberart. \nThe U.S. five-city tour of Hiroaki Umeda: assimilating and Moving State 1 is produced and organized by Japan Society\, with support from Arts Council Tokyo (Creation Grant) and The Harkness Foundation for Dance. \nPresented in association with the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia as part of the lead up to The 2026 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia. \n“Engaging…  Like a tin man with oil flowing freely through his veins…” — The New York Times\n\n\n“Cool\, minimalist\, high-tech hip-hop…” — Infinite Body\, Eva Yaa Asantewaa
