SUMMARY:Core Sommelier Course (Fall Semester) at the Philly Wine School
DESCRIPTION:Eight weeks\, 16 sessions\, and the entry point to a full professional wine curriculum. \nThe Philly Wine School has taught this material since 2001. The Core course combines the school’s Foundation and Intermediate programs into one semester — the full sequence in half the calendar time\, and for less than taking them separately. \nEach Sunday runs two sections. The first works through a wine region: France\, Italy\, Spain and Portugal\, North America\, Australia\, South America. The second builds tasting skill\, from sensory mechanics through varietal structure to blind identification. By week seven students are tasting blind. By week eight they are being examined on it. \nThe teaching is old-school and deliberately demanding — lecture\, guided tasting\, discussion\, instructor feedback\, written exams. Most students find in the first two weeks that they knew less than they thought. That is the design. Bring a notebook. \nGraduates earn Level III certification from the National Wine School and can continue into the Advanced program — four semesters\, 32 classes — and then to master-level study. \nKeith Wallace founded the school in 2001. A Napa-trained winemaker and the author of Corked & Forked\, he has taught at Drexel University. Alana Zerbe is director of wine education; she holds a J.D. and an LL.M.\, practiced law in Washington before moving into wine full time\, and developed the National Wine School’s Level One and Level Three programs. Both teach this course. \nTuition covers the course workbook and tasting materials\, both in-class exams\, and Level III certification on completion. No prerequisites. Classes are held at 109 S. 22nd St. in Rittenhouse. \n\n“For over 20 years\, this independent institution has quietly trained the next wave of sommeliers\, winemakers\, and beverage professionals.” — AWS Wine Journal\, American Wine Society Educational Foundation\, Summer 2025 \n\n\n“The best wine school\, period. Everything I’ve achieved in the world of wine\, I owe to them.” — Neil Ross\, director\, Vernick Restaurant Group

SUMMARY:Cocina Puerto Rico: A Family Recipe Dinner
DESCRIPTION:A family recipe carries more than ingredients. Mia Castro’s debut cookbook\, Cocina Puerto Rico: Recipes from My Abuela’s Kitchen to Yours\, was built from hours-long FaceTime calls with her Abuela Sara in San Juan\, collecting the dishes that define her family’s homeland. Join Mia at a brand-new Philadelphia space for a celebration of Puerto Rican cuisine with three beloved chefs\, as part of Sisterly Love Collective’s 2026 Cookbooks & Convos festival. Mia Castro trained under José Andrés\, Thomas Keller\, and Wolfgang Puck\, and has since competed on Chopped\, Hell’s Kitchen\, and Beat Bobby Flay\, where she beat Bobby Flay. For one night only\, Mia will be joined by three Philadelphia chefs bringing their own family recipes to the table. Yun Fuentes is chef/owner of Bolo\, the Rittenhouse Latin American restaurant and James Beard semifinalist kitchen named for his grandfather\, whose recipes still shape the menu. Amy Rivera Nassar built Amy’s Pastelillos around her mother Iris’s recipes\, turning a tribute to her Hunting Park upbringing into a Fishtown storefront. Jaymi Carnazzi is a food writer whose family recipe won a spot on the menu at Recipe Philly\, the new Center City restaurant built entirely from family dishes submitted by home cooks across the Philadelphia region\, interpreted by Recipe Philly’s Chef Andy Revella. One seating at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $155 per person and include a four-course dinner\, a curated drink\, a signed copy of Cocina Puerto Rico\, and gratuity. Books for the evening are provided by Julia de Burgos Bookstore at Taller Puertorriqueño\, Philadelphia’s only bilingual English/Spanish bookstore\, carrying titles exclusively by Puerto Rican\, Latine\, and Latin American authors. Taller Puertorriqueño is a nonprofit cultural center\, and every purchase supports its education programs and free community events.

SUMMARY:Small Wonders 15 at Arch Enemy Arts
DESCRIPTION:Since the gallery’s inception in 2012\, Arch Enemy Arts has hosted Small Wonders every year. It has become our longest-running annual exhibition and a beloved tradition for our collectors\, who kick off their holiday shopping with small\, original works of art. \nFeaturing artwork priced at or below $300 and measuring no larger than twelve inches\, Small Wonders offers artists an opportunity to reach new audiences and makes collecting original art accessible to a wider range of budgets. Over the years\, the exhibition has showcased hundreds of artists and well over 1\,000 original works\, serving as a welcoming—and addictive—introduction for first-time collectors while giving longtime supporters plenty of reasons to add to their collections. \nThe exhibition will open on First Friday\, November 6th at 5pm\, and work will begin to ship/be available for pick-up the following week. For early access\, email info@archenemyarts.com and ask to be added to the collector preview\, which will be emailed at 2pm on Thursday\, the day before the public opening. If you are looking to purchase work from this show\, we strongly recommend joining the preview. Many works tend to go in the first few hours of the release! \nTo view our archives of past Small Wonders\, visit archenemyarts.com/smallwonders

SUMMARY:ANANSI THE SPIDER
DESCRIPTION:Family fun for 3 and up! The Origin of Anansi the Spider is inspired by an African fable from the Ashanti people of Ghana. Anansi had a dream to be the lord of all stories\, so he went to the Sky-God Nyame and made his request. Nyame gave him the mission of bringing back a python\, a leopard\, and a swarm of hornets and promised that if Anansi did this\, he would become lord of the stories. Anansi was a great trickster and was able to use his cunning wit to fool the animals into coming back to Nyame with him. Anansi succeeded and was named lord of all stories. This production is another in Curio’s Make/Partake series where children will have hands-on experience in participating in the production by making props\, creating sound effects and even controlling the weather. \nPREVIEW NOVEMBER 6 at 6pm\nRUNS NOVEMBER 7 to 22 at 11am and 1pm

SUMMARY:You'll Be Okay: A Bad Daughter's Guide to Survival
DESCRIPTION:You’ll Be Okay: A Bad Daughter’s Guide to Survival is an exhibition exploring concepts of trauma\, breaking patterns\, and the creation of new narratives through viewer participation. The show is composed entirely of artworks by Veronica Cianfrano from various stages of her artistic career\, curated by Jessica Clark\, a long-time friend and collaborator who has known her through many of those stages. \n  \nThe totality of our experiences makes us who we are; the totality of an artist’s catalog has a similar role. Past and present hang together on these walls\, just as thoughts of the past bubble up into our daily lives. Viewers are invited to actively create their own stories based on the artworks present in the show\, deriving meaning from the imagery\, materials\, and formal choices made by the artist. Gallery attendees are able to move through the show unencumbered\, empowered to inhabit roles of author and creator. The viewer achieves what the artist cannot by viewing the work from a different perspective; they offer up new meanings and steer the direction of future pieces.  \n  \nAbington Art Center  \n515 Meetinghouse Rd\, Jenkintown\, PA \nabingtonartcenter.org  \nOn View: Nov. 6 – Jan. 4                                                    \nOpening Reception: Fri.
