SUMMARY:The Devil’s Playground: The Wine Tasting Class at the Philly Wine School
DESCRIPTION:In Philadelphia\, October 30th isn’t just any night—it’s Mischief Night\, that semi-feral tradition with roots tangled in both colonial history and teenage impulse. Around here\, it’s a time for troublemakers to emerge from the shadows. But instead of egging houses or TP-ing trees\, we’ve devised a far more delicious form of mischief. \nJoin us for a wicked night of wine and wonder\, as we unleash the darkest\, heaviest\, most full-throttle reds from our cellar. These are the wines that haunt wine lists and crush lighter fare with a single pour—the high-alcohol monsters\, the mouth-drying tannic beasts\, the dark-as-sin bottles that make grown sommeliers weep (with joy\, of course). \nIn this one-night-only class\, we’ll taste through the heavyweight contenders of the red wine world—and back it all up with a dose of science. Which wine actually has the most tannin? Which one’s so full-bodied it’s basically a meal? We’ll explore the chemistry of wine structure and why some grapes carry the devil’s weight better than others. \nIf you crave power in your glass\, this is your kind of mischief.

Recent striking retreats from the democratic principles that animated much of the 20th century are inextricably linked to developments in science and technology. Yet decisions about how these technologies should be deployed are taken largely outside the purview of democratic processes. The rights\, duties\, and entitlements of humans are often treated as subordinate to the goals of technological efficiency and economic growth. In short\, science and technology have supplanted democracy in ordering our lives and\, in so doing\, have become ends in themselves. \nJoin the American Philosophical Society and the McQuillan Institute for Science\, Technology\, and the Human Future on Thursday\, October 29\, 2026 to welcome Sheila Jasanoff (APS 2021)\, Pforzheimer Professor of Science and Technology Studies at the Harvard Kennedy School\, for a lecture on “A Constitution for the 21st Century.” Fellow APS Member Linda Greenhouse (APS 2001) will offer a response. \nPrior to the evening’s lecture\, there will be a half-day\, interdisciplinary workshop that explores topics in science\, technology\, and democracy. The public is welcome to attend all sessions. \nPanel Descriptions\nPanel 1: American Citizenship and Public Reason since 1776\nAt the 250th anniversary of the United States\, democratic governance confronts a central paradox. From its founding\, the US government has struggled to define the proper relationship between “the people” and their elected representatives\, through both federal and state constitutions. Political theory and practice are preoccupied with the legitimacy of those elected to make decisions in our name. We have\, however\, left largely implicit the constitutional status of the experts and institutions tasked with knowing for the people. From Jefferson’s faith in citizens’ enlightened rationality to the recent Supreme Court ruling against “expert agencies” in Loper Bright v. Raimondo\, American politics questions how far experts\, by virtue of specialized knowledge\, have a right to govern in our name. This panel interrogates how ideas of what citizens should know and how they should be governed are linked in American politics. How are the few empowered to know for the many? What visions of citizen understanding are embedded in institutions and processes of public reasoning? And how\, over time\, has the American public held experts to account? \nPanelists: \nProfessor Bentley Allan\, Johns Hopkins University\nProfessor D. Graham Burnett\, Princeton University\nProfessor J. Benjamin Hurlbut\, Arizona State University\nProfessor Sophia Rosenfeld\, University of Pennsylvania\nPanel 2: The Ethics of Invention at the Frontiers of Life\nThe rights to “life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness” enjoy a central position in our civic lexicon. More often than not\, the interpretation of these words turns upon the meaning of the word liberty. Recent developments in the biosciences and technologies\, however\, have destabilized our understanding of the meaning and worth of human life. Biotechnologies are increasingly developing the power to control the dynamics of life\, from reproduction to aging and dying\, raising difficult questions of what counts as life and which interventions society sees as impermissible. Biotechnological developments often transcend the territorial boundaries of nation-states and concentrate power outside of democratic processes. This panel juxtaposes perspectives from the creative arts\, law\, bioethics\, and cutting edge science to reflect on the challenges posed to the dignity of human life as knowledge and technology advance. What are the responsibilities of scientists\, citizens\, ethical experts\, and the state in steering technologies with the potential to redefine what it means to be human? How can societies navigate between competing notions of progress and risk? And how can we imagine a politics that embraces the desire for new knowledge while also respecting the dignity of human life? \nPanelists: \nYoi Kawakubo\, artist and filmmaker\nProfessor Adriana Petryna\, University of Pennsylvania\nProfessor Kiran Musunuru\, University of Pennsylvania\nProfessor O. Carter Snead\, University of Notre Dame\nProvisional Program (Subject to Adjustments)\n● 3:00 Panel 1 – American Citizenship and Public Reason since 1776\n● 4:00 Coffee Break\n● 4:15 Panel 2 – The Ethics of Invention at the Frontiers of Life\n● 5:15 Reception\n● 6:00 Welcome and Introduction\n● 6:05 Public Lecture — A Constitution for the 21st Century with Sheila Jasanoff\n● 6:50 Closing and Adjourn with Linda Greenhouse

DESCRIPTION:Battle of the Paddles is Bethesda Project’s third annual pickleball tournament and fundraiser! All proceeds raised support Bethesda Project\, a nonprofit that provides shelter\, housing\, and services for unhoused adults. \nIMPORTANT! To participate in the in-person tournament\, you must register as an individual or a doubles team ($40 per participant) and set up a personal fundraising page. There will be an opportunity at registration check-out to list the name of your doubles partner – or you can contact us separately with their name at a later date. Individuals who would like to fundraise but do not wish to play in the in-person tournament may skip the registration fee and create a personal fundraising page. \n2. Recruit your friends\, family\, and even your co-workers to join or support your fundraising page. \nPro-tip: Write a social media post that shares why you’re playing and invite your networks to join you. Be sure to tag @BethesdaProject! \nWHAT DOES MY REGISTRATION INCLUDE?\n• Participation in the tournament at Bounce Pickleball Philly\n• Use of free pickleball equipment\n• Branded Bethesda Project swag\n• Opportunity to win prizes! \nPEER-TO-PEER FUNDRAISING\nHelp us meet our overall $30\,000 fundraising goal for this event through peer-to-peer fundraising! Each participant is encouraged to raise a minimum of $200/person from their networks to assist Bethesda Project’s programs and services. You could donate $200 individually\, or ask friends\, family\, colleagues or others in your network to contribute to your fundraising page. This could be asking 10 friends to donate $20 each\, two friends to donate $100 each\, or whatever combination that helps you meet or exceed the $200 goal! 100% of funds raised support Bethesda Project’s programs and services. \nHOW IT WORKS:\nBattle of the Paddles is a mixed-doubles style tournament that will take place at Bounce Philly\, located at 913 Wallace Street\, in Philadelphia from 11:00 am- 2:00 pm.
