SUMMARY:The Devil’s Playground: The Wine Tasting Class at the Philly Wine School
DESCRIPTION:In Philadelphia\, October 30th isn’t just any night—it’s Mischief Night\, that semi-feral tradition with roots tangled in both colonial history and teenage impulse. Around here\, it’s a time for troublemakers to emerge from the shadows. But instead of egging houses or TP-ing trees\, we’ve devised a far more delicious form of mischief. \nJoin us for a wicked night of wine and wonder\, as we unleash the darkest\, heaviest\, most full-throttle reds from our cellar. These are the wines that haunt wine lists and crush lighter fare with a single pour—the high-alcohol monsters\, the mouth-drying tannic beasts\, the dark-as-sin bottles that make grown sommeliers weep (with joy\, of course). \nIn this one-night-only class\, we’ll taste through the heavyweight contenders of the red wine world—and back it all up with a dose of science. Which wine actually has the most tannin? Which one’s so full-bodied it’s basically a meal? We’ll explore the chemistry of wine structure and why some grapes carry the devil’s weight better than others. \nIf you crave power in your glass\, this is your kind of mischief.

SUMMARY:Bourbon! The Whiskey Tasting Class at the Philly Wine School
DESCRIPTION:Bourbon! is a tour-de-force of one of our favorite drinks. Learn how it’s made\, what makes for a great bourbon\, and some brands to look out for while tasting some fantastic examples. A generation ago\, they called it brown liquor. Now\, we call it the angel’s share.   Do you know what all great liquor has in common? They are aged for many years –sometimes decades– in charred white oak barrels. \nBarrel-aged booze is what this class is about. This is the class for boozehounds looking for the next great experience. From Tennessee Bourbon to Philly-made Bourbon\, you will learn about (and taste) a fantastic selection of barrel-aged booze. This class features some of our favorite bourbons but includes a how-to to make great cocktails. We’ll even show you how to turn white spirits into your signature whiskey.

SUMMARY:Teddy Leads Adams & Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Join Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Grammy Award-winning conductor-composer Teddy Abrams (’08) for an afternoon of vivid symphonic storytelling. The program opens with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8\, showcasing the composer’s knack for mischief and irony\, complete with a witty imitation of a metronome and a tip of the hat to Haydn. Tania León’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Stride\, written to honor the legacy of suffragist Susan B. Anthony\, follows. Composed for the New York Philharmonic’s project marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment\, it combines the sounds of León’s Cuban American heritage with a dark\, restless energy. \n  \nThe afternoon culminates with John Adams’ Harmonielehre. A modern symphonic classic since its 1985 premiere\, this exhilarating work marked Adams’ breakthrough as one of today’s most influential composers. Inspired by a vivid dream\, its three movements surge with pulsing rhythms and shimmering waves of color in celebration of the composer’s 80th birthday.

SUMMARY:Pier Players Theatre Company Presents "Big Babies" - A New Comedy for Parents
DESCRIPTION:Pier Players Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Big Babies\, a hilarious new farcical comedy by Kate Brennan and David Lee White. \nSeemingly-happy couple Janus and Troy host their first adults-only dinner party since having a child\, but the sophisticated night that they had hoped for takes a startling turn. In this hilarious and chaotic farcical romp\, these “mature” adults devolve into the Big Babies that they truly are. \nBig Babies is written by Jonathan Larson Grant Finalists Kate Brennan and David Lee White (known together as Brennan & White). The show is directed by Deborah Lynn Meier and is produced by Pier Players’ Artistic Director Chelsea Cylinder. This production marks Pier Players’ third collaboration with David Lee White\, who also wrote Etiquette and the book for The Angry Grammarian\, and second collaboration with Deborah Lynn Meier\, who directed their production of Ink & Paint.
