SUMMARY:2026 Philadelphia Lantern Slide Salon
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Archives Month Philly by viewing glass lantern slides from local special collections! \nPhiladelphia Lantern Slide Salon\nWednesday\, October 7\, 2026\, 6 to 7:30 pm – in the Wagner’s lecture hall \nCelebrate Archives Month Philly at the Wagner Free Institute of Science as we showcase glass lantern slides from the special collections of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University\, the American Philosophical Society\, Historical Medical Library of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society\, Commercial Museum Lantern Slide Collection\, and the Wagner Free Institute of Science. \nIn the spirit of lantern exhibition culture\, this salon will bring together unique and rarely-seen images presented in the context for which they were originally created. Viewers will marvel at the diverse landscapes of Hawaii\, look at floral slides captured using Lumière autochromes\, the world’s first commercially successful color photographic process\, view snippets from lectures\, textbooks\, and films developed by the United Fruit Company and the Philadelphia Inter-State Dairy Council to better market their products to children\, and so much more! \nPredating the motion picture\, lantern slides were used for entertainment and to illustrate educational programs\, including those held at the Wagner. This event will be held in the Wagner’s Victorian-era lecture hall using our historic lantern projector. Please join us for this rare treat as we revive an old technology in order to see culturally significant lantern slide collections from the libraries and archives of Philadelphia’s most distinguished institutions!

SUMMARY:Villanova Theatre Presents The Moors
DESCRIPTION:Villanova Theatre Presents The Moors\, from September 24 through October 4 at the Mullen Center for the Performing Arts – Court Theatre. On the desolate English moors\, a household of women guards its secrets with the same quiet care it devotes to everything else. When a governess arrives expecting a conventional post\, she discovers unwritten rules\, shifting alliances\, and very real danger. In The Moors\, every character aches to be loved\, recognized\, or feared — and at least one of them is willing to kill for it. At turns humorous\, savage\, and seductive\, Silverman’s inspired take on the Brontë sisters’ celebrated novels is a dark comedy steeped in Victorian atmosphere. Come for the gothic intrigue. Stay for the lovestruck dog.

SUMMARY:The Philadelphia Cup Regatta
DESCRIPTION:Register Now! \nPhiladelphia Cup Regatta Set for October 3\, 2026 \nHosted by the Liberty Sailing Club\, Riverton Yacht Club & Corinthian Yacht Club \n  \nPhiladelphia\, Pennsylvania. Nearly 30 boats from Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, and Delaware have already signed up for the 2026 Philadelphia Cup Regatta. Add your boat to the fleet now at www.philadelphiacupregatta.com. Set for Saturday\, October 3\, on the Delaware River\, Center City Philadelphia’s only sailing regatta delivers competitive racing with the city skyline as a one-of-a-kind backdrop and a chance to earn a place on the prestigious Philadelphia Cup perpetual trophy. Hosted by Liberty Sailing Club\, Riverton Yacht Club\, and The Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia\, racing is open to J27\, J22\, Lightning\, Flying Scot\, Mariner\, V15\, Laser\, Thistle\, Corinthian Sloop\, and Sunfish classes\, plus PHRF boats. Sail something else? Rally two other boats in your class\, and you’ve got a race! \n  \n“We look forward to welcoming sailors from across the tri-state area to race in the heart of Philadelphia\, where the Delaware River and city skyline create a dynamic venue that’s every bit as exciting for spectators along the waterfront\,” says Laura Ness\, regatta director. “New this year\, the Awards Ceremony adds a patriotic-themed reception celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.” \n  \nPurchase Awards Ceremony and Reception Tickets: https://shop.philadelphiacupregatta.com/products/2026-philadelphia-cup-regatta-reception-ticket \n  \nRegister Now! \n  \nThe entry fee is only $40 for Lasers and Sunfish\, $55 for all other Dinghies\, and $80 for Keelboats. Late entry on October 2 and 3 is $115 per boat. This fee includes a light breakfast for competitors\, one skipper bag per boat\, and launching service for One Design boats (Sunfish\, Laser\, Flying Scot\, and Lightning) at the Independence Seaport Museum’s boat basin or via a boat access ramp at Race Street and Columbus. Boat slips are available at Penn’s Landing Marina\, Pier 3 and Pier 5\, and Wiggins Park Marina\, but are not included in the entry fee and are not guaranteed. A lift will be available for trailered boats such as Flying Scots and Lightnings. The competitors’ check-in will be at the Independence Seaport Museum in The Seaport Boat Shop. The regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2025-2028 (RRS)\, including the prescriptions of U.S. Sailing except as modified by the Sailing Instructions. \n  \nRacing boats will launch from the start line off Penn’s Landing for round-the-buoy racing\, navigating current\, fellow competitors\, and wind in the Delaware River. The first start is at 10:30 a.m.\, with the last race starting no later than 3:30 p.m. Racecourses will be set north of the Ben Franklin Bridge south to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay base\, only a little over a 1-mile long in distance\, so that spectators can catch some of the action all along the waterfront. The Awards Ceremony and waterfront afterparty follow. \n  \nReady to Race \n  \nDinghies and keelboats\, from 14′ Laser to 30′ J/30\, are ready to race. \n  \nOne of these is the 19′ Flying Scot\, named Flying Scot\, skippered by Riverton\, NJ’s Arthur Littleton. This isn’t Littleton’s first Philadelphia Cup Regatta. He sailed several years ago in a Sunfish. This year\, he and his crew are one of three Flying Scots representing the Riverton Yacht Club in this one-design. \n  \nIt is not often you get to race in front of Penn’s Landing with the Philadelphia skyline in full view. For me\, it has been 10-15 years. Supporting sailing events like this helps keep sailboat racing alive. A lot of effort goes into planning a regatta\, and Riverton Yacht Club is helping promote and support Liberty in making it a success\,” says Littleton. \n  \nThe historic Delaware and Tinicum\, 24-foot Corinthian Sloops\, designed by Philadelphia naval architect Thomas Bowes in 1951\, will be on the start line this year. The Delaware was rebuilt in 2018 and the Tinicum in 2023 at Independence Seaport Museum’s Seaport Boat Shop to help revive one-design Corinthian Sloop racing on the Delaware River. \n  \n“I’ve always seen the Philadelphia Cup as a great way to showcase the recreational sailing that is thriving on the Delaware River. Now that the event has returned to the Delaware\, it seems like a great opportunity to get two historic Philadelphia boats racing on the river again. The hope is to garner interest not only in this class of boat but in all boats\, both modern and traditional\, and to continue growing recreational sailing in Philadelphia. Crew for both boats is still being assembled. In the meantime\, we are freshening up paint and varnish on both boats and preparing the rigging for race day\,” says Dormond\, director of Boat Shop and Waterfront Operations. \n  \nOrganizers of The Philadelphia Cup Regatta thank Con Murphy’s Irish Pub\, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation\, SeaPhilly\, Mainstay\, Campari\, Penn’s Landing Marina Pier 3 and Pier 5\, and Live! Casino & Hotel for their sponsorship. \n  \nPast to Present \n  \nThe Philadelphia Cup Regatta was first hosted by Liberty Sailing Club\, Riverton Yacht Club\, and The Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia from 2011 to 2016 and returned in 2024. The Cup itself dates back over 40 years. \n  \nFor more information\, visit www.philadelphiacupregatta.com/ or contact the regatta director at info@philadelphiacupregatta.com. Check out the Philadelphia Cup Regatta on Facebook (www.facebook.com/Philadelphiacupregatta) and Instagram @philly_cup_regatta. \n  \nNOTES TO EDITORS \n  \nAbout the Philadelphia Cup Regatta: \n  \nLiberty Sailing Club hosted the Philadelphia Cup Regatta in October 2025 and May 2024. One-design racing is held on Wednesday and Thursday nights from April to September. Weekday and weekend cruising excursions and social events are held at the Club’s Clubhouse\, a short walk from Pier 5 Marina. Following U.S. Sailing’s lead\, LSC is committed to advancing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in the sport of sailing and to foster an environment that is welcoming to all sailors. \n  \nAbout the Riverton Yacht Club: \n  \nRiverton Yacht Club is the oldest yacht club on the Delaware River\, New Jersey’s oldest\, and one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating yacht clubs\, having been founded in 1865. Active one-design fleets include J/22s\, Lightnings\, Mariners\, Flying Scots\, plus two PHRF classes. The annual Governor’s Cup Regatta\, sailed each June since 1949\, draws nearly 100 boats. More than 100 World\, North American\, National\, America’s Cup\, and Olympic champions have called it home. \n  \nAbout The Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia: \n  \nFounded more than 130 years ago\, The Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia (CYCOP) is one of America’s premier sailing clubs\, with a distinguished history of producing national champions\, Olympic sailors\, offshore race winners\, and America’s Cup defenders. The club supports an active racing program that includes Vanguard 15 (V15) and J/22 one-design fleets\, along with a proud offshore racing tradition. Corinthian members regularly compete in many of the East Coast’s most prestigious offshore events\, including the Annapolis-to-Newport Race and the Newport Bermuda Race\, continuing a legacy of seamanship\, teamwork\, and competitive excellence. In addition to championship racing\, the club offers sailing instruction\, youth and adult development programs\, cruising\, and recreational sailing. SUMMARY:Philly Fringe Solo Comedy Show About The Raw Deal of Being a Woman
DESCRIPTION:Why have women been handed such a “Raw Deal\,” and what can we do about it? \nFrom rights being erased\, to still carrying most of the household labor\, women are still buckling under many of the challenges their great-grandmothers marched for. If we laugh about it\, can we transform it? \nIn her 18th original solo show across 30 years of Philadelphia Fringe Festival appearances\, Jennifer Blaine playfully confronts today’s challenging reality for women through a personal lens. Armed with her brilliant impersonation skills\, and her virtuosic ability to juggle humor and poignant perspectives\, Blaine illustrates how she transforms her Raw Deal into a source of strength\, inspiration\, and power. \nIn addition to critiquing the current state of the union for women with her crackling wit\, audiences can expect special “appearances” by a surprising range of real-life characters\, from Emily Post to Nate Bergatze to Marianne Williamson. The show also features some of Blaine’s hysterical cast of beloved original characters including her old Jewish Grandma\, Ruth (who will have you rolling with laughter at her dirty jokes) and her “everyman\,” Danny (who doles out dating advice for incels). \nReflecting on the incredible feat of debuting 18 solo performance works across 30 years of Fringe appearances\, Blaine says: “My art form is the solo show\, and it’s always an evolving craft\, where I employ the crucible of transformation. Some shows have been pure stand-up\, some have 12 characters with no narration\, some have songs\, some are highly interactive\, some are satirical. ‘Raw Deal’ combines many of these elements\, along with some personal confessions of raw deals in my life that I believe will resonate in their absurdity and universality. With this show\, I celebrate the sometimes quiet\, solitary struggle we are going through to overthrow the patriarchy\, each in our own unique way.” \nBlaine\, Philadelphia’s acclaimed solo performer\, comedienne\, and playwright “whose comic genius is like Lily Tomlin and Tracey Ullman” (Philadelphia Daily News)\, has been an outspoken feminist since she could walk. As a girl\, she marched for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)\, later became a Women’s Studies major at the famously progressive Wesleyan University\, and continues to speak out for women’s issues and experiences through her own extraordinary body of solo performance work.

Since opening its doors in 2011\, the House has provided more than lodging – it has offered stability\, compassion\, and community during some of the most challenging moments a family can face. \nAs part of our 15th Anniversary celebration\, Gift of Life Howie’s House is excited to host our inaugural Birthday Bash on Friday\, October 2\, 2026 – an evening celebrating 15 years of hope\, healing\, and community for transplant families traveling to Philadelphia for lifesaving care. \nThe exciting event is open to everyone and will take place on Friday\, October 2nd at @FringeArts in Philly at 6PM. \nTickets purchased ahead of time are $50 and will help raise important funds to support our mission at the House. Each ticket includes: \n– Delicious Food \n– Alcohol and Beverages \n– 5 complimentary door prize tickets and a silent auction \nProceeds from the Birthday Bash directly support transplant patients and caregivers staying at Gift of Life Howie’s House – a 32-room healthcare hospitality house in Philadelphia that provides affordable lodging\, meals\, transportation\, and supportive services for families who must travel to Philadelphia to access lifesaving organ transplant care. \nIn 2025 alone\, the House provided more than 10\,000 nights of lodging\, 36\,000 meals\, and over 1\,400 shuttle rides to six local transplant centers. Families are asked to contribute only $40 per night\, regardless of the true cost of their stay\, and no eligible family is ever turned away due to financial hardship. Since opening our doors in 2011\, we have provided $17 Million in subsidized care for transplant patients and their families.

SUMMARY:The Filangieri-Franklin Correspondence: Foundational Dialogue Between Italy and America
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia are pleased to present an evening exploring one of the earliest intellectual connections between Italy and the United States. Beginning with a hybrid lecture by Professor Amedeo Arena\, Full Professor of European Union Law at the University of Naples Federico II\, the program will examine the enduring significance of the correspondence between Gaetano Filangieri and Benjamin Franklin and the Enlightenment ideals that helped shape modern conceptions of liberty\, government\, and the pursuit of happiness. Drawing on Professor Arena’s recent publication\, Cittadino di tutti i luoghi\, contemporaneo di tutte l’età: l’universalità del pensiero di Gaetano Filangieri\, the lecture will reflect on Filangieri’s influence 250 years after the Declaration of Independence. \nFollowing the lecture\, guests are invited to a reception marking both the opening of Italian Heritage Month and the debut of HSP’s exhibition\, Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1900s\, which explores the evolving communities and identities that have shaped the Commonwealth’s story. A temporary exhibit of original documents related to the Filangieri-Franklin correspondence will also be on view for this evening only.
