SUMMARY:Sarajevo Will Be (Everything Else Will Pass)
DESCRIPTION:Lasting from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996 (1\,425 days)\, the siege of Sarajevo was a prolonged military blockade of Sarajevo\, the capital of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina\, during the ethnically charged Bosnian War. The city was initially besieged by the Yugoslav People’s Army\, before they were replaced by elements of the newly-formed Army of Republika Srpska. The siege was three times longer than the Battle of Stalingrad and more than a year longer than the siege of Leningrad\, making it the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. \nWhen the siege began\, Sarajevo’s Jewish community numbered roughly a thousand people. Many were Holocaust survivors who recognized what was starting. They stayed\, and turned their community center into a pharmacy that dispensed medicine without checking ethnic ID cards\, a soup kitchen that fed anyone who walked in\, a ham radio that carried messages when the phone lines died\, and a bus convoy operation that evacuated thousands of Sarajevans\, most of who were not Jewish. \nTikkun Olam usually gets translated as repair of the world\, and then left there\, floating somewhere above the actual world. In Sarajevo this happened in the real\, present sense; it looked like counting pills\, keeping lists\, and loading buses\, for four years\, without stopping\, for whoever showed up. \nYeda Theatre traveled to Bosnia and interviewed the people who ran it\, including Jakob Finci\, the former president of the Jewish community who led twelve evacuation convoys. Those recorded voices are what created this piece\, alongside movement\, live violin and accordion\, and shadow puppetry. \nThrough movement\, we remember. Through remembering\, we act.

DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. DESCRIPTION:Basic Information: \nShow:  Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater presents:  WHO \nDates & Times:  Fridays\, Oct 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 at 8pm \nLocation:  SideQuest Theater\, 2030 Sansom St \nTickets:  sidequesttheater.com \n  \nShort Description: In their show\, WHO\, Tongue & Groove improvises scenes and monologues exploring real life experiences\, both hilarious and heartbreaking\, inspired by written responses to the question ‘who are you?\,‘ anonymously submitted by the audience. \n  \nLonger Description:  For Tongue & Groove’s show\, WHO\, each audience member is given an index card\, a pen\, and the prompt: “beneath the typical identifiers — and in just one sentence — who are you?”  Encouraged to answer honestly\, the audience anonymously submits their responses\, which are randomly drawn by the actors and read aloud. The ensemble then spontaneously performs a montage of funny and touching scenes & monologues inspired by the audience’s personal descriptions. \nMid-show\, the ensemble chooses more cards to inspire a hilarious Speed Dating Game with a special twist you’ll wish you could use on your next date!
