DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar for the FunTimes Magazine Women of Influence: From Foster Care to Impact awards dinner honoring organizations and women connected to the foster-care system. SUMMARY:Human / Nature
DESCRIPTION:Gravers Lane Gallery \n8405 Germantown Avenue \nPhiladelphia | PA 19118 \n215-247-1603 \nOpening reception: June 5 | 5 – 8 pm\nArtist Talks: June 5 | 6:30 pm\nClosing reception: July 3 | 5 – 8 pm\nArtist Talks: July 3 | 6:30 pm \nGravers Lane Gallery welcomes the remarkable work of Painter / Sculptor Ron Isaacs. Renowned Kentucky-based artist and teacher with a career spanning over 50 years\, Isaacs’s work has been exhibited in major galleries in Chicago\, Philadelphia\, and New York\, with work residing in multiple private and corporate collections. Currently\, the largest public collection is housed in the Racine Museum of Art in Wisconsin. \nBy using objects such as garments\, tools\, and organic materials\, Isaacs explores the narrative of objects and their relation to mortality\, memory\, and the passage of time. Through the process of creating an installation with objects in a still-life setting\, Isaacs experiments with birch\, plywood\, and acrylic paint to construct his work. \nAs a trained painter\, Isaacs employs techniques similar to those of the old masters to create a composition reminiscent of traditional two-dimensional work. By balancing form\, texture\, and light\, Isaacs’ work explores the elements of memory\, the passage of time\, and how objects can evoke memory.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The “Gooning” Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The ‘Gooning’ Lecture\,” answers to our questions about a growing online sexual practice\, with Jenn Pollitt\, assistant professor in the gender\, sexuality\, and women’s studies program at Temple University. \nThe term “gooning” has exploded across online spaces\, yet many people have only a vague or wildly inaccurate sense of what it actually references. \nLearn about gooning both as a sexual practice and as a cultural phenomenon shaped by the internet with Jenn Pollitt\, a scholar whose research focuses on pornography\, digital culture\, and the changing nature of intimacy in the age of screens. \nShe’ll provide clear\, grounded\, and research-informed exploration what gooning is\, how it emerged within digital porn cultures\, and why it resonates with so many people in an era defined by screens\, algorithms\, and constant stimulation. \nDrawing from media studies\, sexuality research\, and firsthand analysis of online communities\, Dr. Pollitt will situate gooning within broader conversations about intimacy\, attention\, and embodiment in the digital age. Rather than treating gooning as fringe or purely sensational\, she’ll frame it as a lens for understanding larger cultural shifts\, especially in terms of how people navigate loneliness\, overstimulation\, and the search for intimacy in increasingly mediated environments. \nAmong the questions she’ll tackle: What does gooning reveal about how technology is reshaping desire and sexual experience? Why does it blur the line between pleasure and dissociation? And how does it challenge traditional ideas about connection\, agency\, and control? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: Photo by Terry Johnston / Creative Commons

DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with The Bearded Ladies Cabaret and FringeArts\, GIRL DOLLS is part tea party\, part identity crisis—a deep dive into our country’s favorite doll franchise in search of the stories that got left out of the dollhouse. Through original songs\, nostalgic PowerPoints\, and serious research™ disguised as musical comedy\, Jackie\, Pax\, and an all-star band rip open the seams of American girlhood to ask: What does your favorite doll reveal about your childhood trauma? Is Samantha Parkington a sleeper agent for the American Project? And most importantly: When everything else about America feels awful\, why can’t we let go of their tiny doll hands? Bring your doll\, and come ready to laugh\, cry\, and cringe our collective way down memory lane!

SUMMARY:Chester County Studio Tour-Studio 36
DESCRIPTION:Come out and meet the artists of studio 36. \nSaturday May 16th 10-6PM and Sunday May 17th 11-5PM \nFrom studio host Stacy: I create fine art photography that captures the deep emotional connection between horses and humans. With a background in both photography and dressage\, I use light\, shadow\, and composition to reveal the beauty\, strength\, and spirit of the equine form. While horses are at the heart of my work\, I also explore still life\, florals\, and nature through a fine art lens—always seeking to create imagery that feels both timeless and intimate. \n  \nFrom guest artist Ivy: \nI began my art career eighteen years ago in commercial art\, but my focus shifted in recent years to create sparkly mosaics and custom paintings. Beginning my mosaics with a simple acrylic or gouache painting provides me with a foundation. Working with mosaics gives me the chance to take broken pieces of glass and make them into a new creation. Since mosaics require a sturdy surface\, I create them on canvas panels or cradled wood panels. Contrary to traditional mosaic artwork\, I use glue to adhere the beads\, pieces of glass\, mica\, and other materials to the panels\, which allows the materials to lend extra sparkle to my mosaics. \n  \nMy art practice is in direct contrast with my rigid day job. The dreamlike quality of my art represents freedom; I can make and do what I want and therefore bring a sense of hope and beauty to my audience. \nAt 1PM on Sunday\, Ivy will demonstrate her groutless mosaic technique to add sparkle to any space.

SUMMARY:The Savoy Company presents Gilbert & Sullivan's The Gondoliers!
DESCRIPTION:Come dance the cachucha and join The Savoy Company in celebrating our 125th anniversary year with Gilbert & Sullivan’s uplifting operetta\, The Gondoliers! Set in Venice and the fictional kingdom of Barataria\, the plot centers on two gondoliers\, Marco and Giuseppe\, who discover that one of them is the rightful king but cannot determine which. They agree to rule jointly until the true monarch can be identified\, allowing Gilbert to satirize monarchy\, aristocracy\, and British political institutions. The show is especially noted for its unusually warm tone and emphasis on equality\, reflecting contemporary late-Victorian debates about class and governance.\nThrough its witty dialogue\, lively ensemble numbers\, and playful mockery of aristocracy and political systems\, the operetta celebrates equality while poking fun at rigid class distinctions and the pretensions of monarchy.\nPremiered in 1889\, The Gondoliers is the twelfth collaboration between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. The show ran for 554 performances\, making it one of the duo’s most successful later works.\nIntroducing Stage Director Grant Mech and Choreographer Rebecca Malcolm-Naib\, whose inventive vision brings The Gondoliers to life in a masterful comedy that sparkles under the outstanding baton of Music Director Peter Hilliard and a superb professional orchestra. Produced by William Kader\, the production is enhanced by a striking\, professionally designed set and delightfully charming costumes.
