SUMMARY:Practicing Attention—But Why?
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on themes from her bestselling 2019 book How to Do Nothing\, Jenny Odell will examine anxieties about our ability to focus and the way that the issue is often emptied of social\, political\, and spiritual content. Like anything else\, the practice of paying attention can be aimed at increased productivity for productivity’s sake—or worse\, an abstract valuing of mental “performance.” She will argue that much of modern advice regarding the practice of attention is inadequate because it misses the role of purpose\, commitment\, and love. \nA book signing will follow the lecture and Q&A. \nDrawing on themes from her bestselling 2019 book How to Do Nothing\, Jenny Odell will examine anxieties about our ability to focus and the way that the issue is often emptied of social\, political\, and spiritual content. SUMMARY:Villanova Theatre Presents The Moors
DESCRIPTION:Villanova Theatre Presents The Moors\, from September 24 through October 4 at the Mullen Center for the Performing Arts – Court Theatre. On the desolate English moors\, a household of women guards its secrets with the same quiet care it devotes to everything else. When a governess arrives expecting a conventional post\, she discovers unwritten rules\, shifting alliances\, and very real danger. In The Moors\, every character aches to be loved\, recognized\, or feared — and at least one of them is willing to kill for it. At turns humorous\, savage\, and seductive\, Silverman’s inspired take on the Brontë sisters’ celebrated novels is a dark comedy steeped in Victorian atmosphere. Come for the gothic intrigue. Stay for the lovestruck dog.

SUMMARY:The Adoption Game
DESCRIPTION:WHO GETS TO TELL THE STORY?  \nThe Adoption Game turns transracial adoption into a darkly funny\, live game show written and performed by transracial adoptee Andrew Watring\, and directed by Gabe Moses\, invites audiences to play along—and reconsider who gets to control the stories we tell about family. \nUpstream Performance Collaborative presents the world premiere of The Adoption Game\, a darkly funny\, deeply personal\, interactive solo performance written and performed by Philadelphia theatre artist and transracial adoptee Andrew Watring. Presented through Cannonball’s Immersive Track Cohort as part of the 2026 Philadelphia Fringe Festival\, the production runs for just three performances\, September 25–27\, 2026\, at Asian Arts Initiative’s Black Box Theater. \nBilled as “America’s one-and-only adoption-themed game show\,” The Adoption Game transforms the theatre into a live studio audience. Under the watchful eye of dazzling host Andre Devon\, spectators encounter applause signs\, prizes\, audience games\, commercial breaks\, and all the polished machinery of televised entertainment. Beneath the spectacle is a more vulnerable question: What happens when the child at the center of an adoption story finally gets to control the narrative?

SUMMARY:Philly Fringe Solo Comedy Show About The Raw Deal of Being a Woman
DESCRIPTION:Why have women been handed such a “Raw Deal\,” and what can we do about it? \nFrom rights being erased\, to still carrying most of the household labor\, women are still buckling under many of the challenges their great-grandmothers marched for. If we laugh about it\, can we transform it? \nIn her 18th original solo show across 30 years of Philadelphia Fringe Festival appearances\, Jennifer Blaine playfully confronts today’s challenging reality for women through a personal lens. Armed with her brilliant impersonation skills\, and her virtuosic ability to juggle humor and poignant perspectives\, Blaine illustrates how she transforms her Raw Deal into a source of strength\, inspiration\, and power. \nIn addition to critiquing the current state of the union for women with her crackling wit\, audiences can expect special “appearances” by a surprising range of real-life characters\, from Emily Post to Nate Bergatze to Marianne Williamson. The show also features some of Blaine’s hysterical cast of beloved original characters including her old Jewish Grandma\, Ruth (who will have you rolling with laughter at her dirty jokes) and her “everyman\,” Danny (who doles out dating advice for incels). \nReflecting on the incredible feat of debuting 18 solo performance works across 30 years of Fringe appearances\, Blaine says: “My art form is the solo show\, and it’s always an evolving craft\, where I employ the crucible of transformation. Some shows have been pure stand-up\, some have 12 characters with no narration\, some have songs\, some are highly interactive\, some are satirical. ‘Raw Deal’ combines many of these elements\, along with some personal confessions of raw deals in my life that I believe will resonate in their absurdity and universality. With this show\, I celebrate the sometimes quiet\, solitary struggle we are going through to overthrow the patriarchy\, each in our own unique way.” \nBlaine\, Philadelphia’s acclaimed solo performer\, comedienne\, and playwright “whose comic genius is like Lily Tomlin and Tracey Ullman” (Philadelphia Daily News)\, has been an outspoken feminist since she could walk. As a girl\, she marched for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)\, later became a Women’s Studies major at the famously progressive Wesleyan University\, and continues to speak out for women’s issues and experiences through her own extraordinary body of solo performance work.

SUMMARY:SPORTS!
DESCRIPTION:Two teams – LAVA and OBSIDIAN battle for ultimate SPORTS glory! Are our knees past their prime? YES. Are we good at SPORTS? YES AND NO AND ALSO KINDA. So why are we playing sports? Because now we’re ADULTS and there’s questions we can only answer in the SWEAT-POURING\, HEART-POUNDING HEAT OF COMPETITION that we sure as hell couldn’t answer in middle school gym class. \n  \nWe take the field to FIND OUT–what’s the line between HEALTHY and UNHEALTHY competition? What MYTHIC VERSIONS of ourselves are awakened in the whole-body pursuit of victory? \n  \nSo will YOU be there to root on your team and guide them to glory? HELL FREAKIN YEAH. \n  \nAnd listen–is your relationship with sports kinda complicated? OURS TOO. Some of us were going to be headed for the OLYMPICS but it SUCKED THE JOY OUT OF COMPETING. Some of us went to college to play volleyball and then tore our Achilles and found THEATER. Some of us avoided sports as much as we could because of TOXIC MASCULINITY. As queer people\, people with bodies past peak athletic performance\, and artists\, what belonging can we find as we collectively DUNK ON OUR DEMONS? \n  \nSO DON’T MISS this one-time-only professionally performed\, athletically amateur\, everything-on-the-line SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA. \n  \nSPORTS! Schedule:\nTailgate 3:00-5pm FREE queer pre-show tailgate event and cornhole tournament hosted by partner OutLoud Sports.\nShow 5-7pm SPORTS! Performance\nMovie 7:30-9:30pm sports film screening hosted by cinéSPEAK\, free with your SPORTS! ticket or $5-10 walk-up for the screening only.
