DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PA: Offstage Onstage: Everything You Didn’t See The Greeks Do will be presented at Cannonball Festival at Asian Arts Initiative Black Box Theater (1219 Vine St) for five performances only.  \nFor the first time ever at Haverford Middle School\, three students interrogate all of the action that traditionally took place offstage in Ancient Greek tragedy: Oedipus stabbing his eyes out after hearing the truth that he murdered his father and married his mother\, Medea killing her children to get revenge on her husband Jason\, and the women of Thebes tearing Pentheus apart after being driven mad by Dionysus. The young theatre historians hop in and out of the different characters and stories of the Greeks to win the praise of their English teacher–Mr. Moscow. As they delve deeper and deeper into exploring these unthinkable acts\, however\, they confront the challenges of their own lives in and outside of school – fashion malfunctions\, bullying\, and\, at its worst\, the fear of gun violence. True to the little ghost party form\, much of the play is performed on a tiny stage. \nIf Pen15 and The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) had a baby about Greek tragedy.

DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired.
