SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2025 she was the subject of a solo exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport\, participated in 11 group exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York and was a nominee for the Pew Fellowship. \nInstagram – @sophie6598\nWebsite – SophieCWhite.com

SUMMARY:America 250 Bus Tour: Revolution & Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore was a key city in the fight for Independence. Did you know Edgar Allan Poe’s grandparents were famous Revolutionary War patriots in Baltimore? \nJoin us for an America 250 bus tour through Baltimore’s Revolutionary past\, where the fight for independence lives on in headstone\, story\, and street. Along the way\, discover the Edgar Allan Poe family’s Revolutionary roots and the lives of Baltimore’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. Tours meet inside the Baltimore Visitor Center at the Inner Harbor. \nThe first stop on this special commemorative tour is Westminster Hall & Burying Ground. World-famous as the final resting place of Edgar Allan Poe\, this hallowed ground is also home to over 300 patriots of the American Revolution and War of 1812—including Poe’s own family. Immigrants\, women\, and working-class heroes like David and Elizabeth Poe\, who aided The Marquis de Lafayette’s troops\, are buried alongside towering figures like General Samuel Smith\, James McHenry\, and Rev. Patrick Allison\, chaplain to the first Continental Congress and an early voice for the separation of church and state. \nThe tour continues with history of two Baltimore signers of the Declaration of Independence: a visit to Old St. Paul’s Cemetery\, where Samuel Chase\, the United States’ first impeached Supreme Court Justice\, is laid to rest\, and then the historic Carroll Mansion where Charles Carroll of Carrollton (the only Catholic signer) spent his final days and where the very bed in which he died remains on display. \nWhether you’re a lifelong Marylander or a first-time visitor\, “Revolution & Remembrance” invites you to see Baltimore’s Revolutionary roots through fresh eyes\, and to reflect on the diverse people who helped shape a nation.
