SUMMARY:Journey Arts' Table Sessions: Kristal Sotomayor
DESCRIPTION:Journey Arts’ beloved Table Sessions returns in April\, curated by award-winning filmmaker Kristal Sotomayor. Prime yourself for an ebullient evening with the boisterous sounds of the kumbia-klezmer-punk collective Mariposas Galácticas\, whose music is inspired by their Ancestor’s shared roots in “radical joy.” \nThen sit forward for a screening of Kristal’s short film Expanding Sanctuary  — the winner of the 2024 BlackStar Philadelphia Filmmaker Award — which flips the script on the current moment by telling the story of an immigrant mother’s triumphant fight for safety for Philly families. \nAnd\, of course\, leave filled not only with joy\, but with a delicious dinner by the James Beard Award-winning Chef Cristina Martínez of South Philly Barbacoa.

SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n  \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n  \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli

SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2025 she was the subject of a solo exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport\, participated in 11 group exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York and was a nominee for the Pew Fellowship. \nInstagram – @sophie6598\nWebsite – SophieCWhite.com

SUMMARY:Workshop: Writing into Difficulty
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the relationships and stories we most need to write about will resist letting themselves be put into words. We start to write and fail\, or we stare at a blank page—not because we have too little to say\, but maybe because our hearts are too full and no words seem like they could be enough. Experimenting with formal constraints to our writing can provide a container that holds what needs to be said\, so that it can pour itself onto the page. \nIn this workshop\, we will explore form in poetry and prose to invite difficult relationships to the page. Beginning from a short discussion of a piece of their own work that helped them to write into family relationships\, Chad Frame and Catharina Coenen will guide writers to experiment with form in prose and poetry to create space for needed words.

World-famous as the final resting place of Edgar Allan Poe\, this hallowed ground is also home to over 300 patriots of the American Revolution and War of 1812—including Poe’s own family. Immigrants\, women\, and working-class heroes like David and Elizabeth Poe\, who aided The Marquis de Lafayette’s troops\, are buried alongside towering figures like General Samuel Smith\, James McHenry\, and Rev. Patrick Allison\, chaplain to the first Continental Congress and an early voice for the separation of church and state. \nThe tour continues with history of two Baltimore signers of the Declaration of Independence: a visit to Old St. Paul’s Cemetery\, where Samuel Chase\, the United States’ first impeached Supreme Court Justice\, is laid to rest\, and then the historic Carroll Mansion where Charles Carroll of Carrollton (the only Catholic signer) spent his final days and where the very bed in which he died remains on display. \nWhether you’re a lifelong Marylander or a first-time visitor\, “Revolution & Remembrance” invites you to see Baltimore’s Revolutionary roots through fresh eyes\, and to reflect on the diverse people who helped shape a nation.
