SUMMARY:Profs & Points Philadelphia: Ketamine on the Couch
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Ketamine on the Couch\,” on how clinicians use a dissociative anesthetic to bring about change at people’s core\, with Karen L. Smith\, director of Full Living: A Psychotherapy Practice\, former instructor at La Salle University and Rosemont College\, and author of Prepare Yourself\, Your Clients and Your Practice for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy: A Step by Step Guide. \nPsychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is having a moment—so much so that the popularity of therapy using ketamine or other psychedelics can make it look ridiculously trendy or\, worse yet\, unhinged. \nBut analytically oriented clinicians use this tool much like dream work—to collect unconscious material\, to excavate early relational patterns\, and to help people access experiences and parts of themselves that their own defenses had made difficult to reach. \nGain an understanding of how ketamine assists therapy with Karen L. Smith\, the author of a well-regarded guide to using psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in outpatient practice and a trainer of clinicians in this area. \nShe’ll discuss how ketamine-assisted psychotherapy helps people who have already experienced a lot of therapy and already possess knowledge of their inner landscape\, but nonetheless have reached a place where they are stuck and not making additional progress. Often in such cases what’s in the way are mind and body defense systems laid down in infancy\, before the acquisition of language and memory\, which became default mood processing and can block access to a formed thought. \nYou’ll learn how psychotherapists use ketamine to help clients lower such defense systems\, to get past the very stubborn thoughts and body responses that get in the way of insights and intention. \nThree specific features of ketamine play a role: Being an anesthetic\, it offers clients the lived experiences of having a calmer\, less defended\, safer\, regulated nervous system as they explore core themes. As a dissociative\, it lets clients simultaneously experience two selves\, a “tripper” and an observing ego that becomes stronger through the experience. By being a promoter of neuroplasticity—the hallmark of all the psychedelics—it offers opportunity for new\, original thought. \nYou’ll emerge from the talk knowing much more about why so much attention is focused on this promising new tool in mental health treatment. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage by Canva.

SUMMARY:The Future Faces of Religious Freedom: A Children’s Program to Celebrate Religious Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a joyful\, family-friendly interfaith experience designed especially for children ages 10 and under. Hosted by Society Hill Synagogue and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church\, this special program is part of Interfaith Philadelphia’s year-long Religious Freedom: Then & Now series. \n  \nThrough stories\, play\, and creative expression\, children will explore different religious traditions. The event is designed to be engaging\, welcoming\, and accessible by inviting curiosity\, questions\, and connection. \n  \nA faith leader from a different tradition will lead a lively storytime\, reading children’s books that celebrate diversity\, interfaith friendship\, and belonging. Children and their families can ask questions and learn more about the leader’s faith and role in their community. \n  \nBetween storytimes\, children can explore interactive activity stations at their own pace: \n  \nSensory Exploration: Dig into hands-on bins filled with meaningful objects and images from different faiths\, with volunteers on hand to share their significance. \nCommunity Art Project: Contribute to a collaborative art installation celebrating identity and belonging. Each child will create their own piece—reflecting what makes their community stronger—which will come together into a larger work of art. \nThis event offers a playful and meaningful introduction to interfaith understanding.

SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2025 she was the subject of a solo exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport\, participated in 11 group exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York and was a nominee for the Pew Fellowship. \nInstagram – @sophie6598\nWebsite – SophieCWhite.com
