DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under our feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nScheduled 2026 Public Archaeology Days: \n\nMarch 21\nApril 18\nMay 16\nJune 20\nJuly 18\nOctober 17 – International Archaeology Day\n\n10am-3pm. Free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend. For safety\, hands-on participation is limited to those ages 5+.
