SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n  \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n  \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Medical Ethics and “The Pitt”
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Medical Ethics and ‘The Pitt\,’” an interactive discussion of how physicians navigate tough questions\, with Sean Aas\, associate professor of philosophy at Georgetown University\, research scholar at its Kennedy Institute of Ethics\, and author of the innovative textbook Bioethics: 50 Puzzles\, Problems\, and Thought Experiments. \nNothing has higher ethical stakes than the field of medicine\, where decisions can be life-or-death. And nowhere are the stakes of medicine more evident than in the emergency department\, where split-second decisions can forever alter the course of the lives of patients and\, sometimes\, practitioners. \nLife-or-death decisions drive the drama of the blockbuster HBO Max television series The Pitt\, which has explored a host of ethical issues associated with medical triage\, surrogate decision-making\, the distribution of scarce resources\, the role of medicine in society\, and the intersection of clinical care and social justice. \nSuch decisions have long been the focus of Sean Aas\, a philosopher who teaches medical ethics at all levels—to undergraduate and graduate students as well as medical professionals—and advised researchers about the ethics of ongoing clinical trials in his previous capacity as a fellow at the National Institutes of Health. He recently began using The Pitt in teaching bioethics at Georgetown. \nLearn the basics of medical ethics—and have a blast being involved in interactive discussions of how to apply them—when Dr. Aas comes to Philadelphia’s Black Squirrel Club to give a talk prescribed for fans of The Pitt and anyone who simply loves to think. \nHe’ll start by reviewing basic concepts in medical ethics. Then he’ll give his audience a chance to apply such concepts by reviewing and discussing some of the most dramatic dilemmas presented in The Pitt in its first two seasons. \nAudience members will have a chance to judge for themselves how well characters handled decisions\, and then they’ll take part in both small-group and large-group discussions of whether and how these judgments can be justified. They’ll learn how to think more philosophically about ethical dilemmas in medicine and in everyday life. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage by Canva.

SUMMARY:BalletX Festival at Highmark Mann
DESCRIPTION:Join BalletX at the Festival at Highmark Mann\, featuring the world premiere of The Four Seasons Reimagined – an epic love letter to Mother Nature that invites audiences into a living\, breathing world shaped by sound\, movement\, light\, and design. Composer and electronic music innovator Dan Deacon creates and performs a bold original score live on stage\, igniting an immersive landscape where the seasons pulse with urgency and wonder. Four visionary choreographers\, Morgann Runacre-Temple (Summer)\, Penny Saunders (Fall)\, Jamar Roberts (Winter)\, and Trey McIntyre (Spring)\, each bring a distinct season to life\, revealing nature as the driving force at the heart of the story: fragile\, fierce\, and magnificently alive. \nWith visually arresting costumes and scenic design by Emma Kingsbury and evocative lighting by Christopher Ash\, the production surrounds audiences in a fully realized sensory environment. Music unfolds in real time\, movement surges through shifting landscapes\, and light transforms the stage into a world in constant evolution. Inspired by Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons\, reimagined through a contemporary lens\, this groundbreaking collaboration dissolves the boundaries between performer and viewer\, drawing audiences into an intimate\, immersive journey through the beauty\, volatility\, and wonder of our planet. \nWe can’t wait to share this one of a kind experience\, including pre-show performances by dance organizations from across the region\, and the return of #OneDanceOnePhilly\, a joyful citywide movement where performers and audiences come together and dance. Check back in for our pre-show performance schedule! \nCo-commissioned with ArtPhilly’s What Now: 2026 Festival and Highmark Mann\, in honor of America250. Supported in part by Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

SUMMARY:Conceived in Crisis: Pennsylvania in 1776
DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Provincial Conference was held June 18–25\, 1776\, at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia. The Conference had a profound impact on American public opinion and facilitated the passing of the Declaration of Independence only a few days later. The 1776 Pennsylvania Constitution was radically innovative for its time\, including a Declaration of Rights that predated the Bill of Rights and a provision that voters did not need to own property. Christopher Pearl\, scholar and author of Conceived in Crisis: The Revolutionary Creation of an American State\, will lead a discussion on the radical birth of the Keystone State. \nA number of original manuscripts from the Provincial Conference will be on view in a pop-up display just for the evening. Also\, program attendees will have the opportunity to view the exhibition Paths To Independence\, 1765-1787\, which includes significant founding documents such as the only known printer’s proof of the Declaration of Independence.

SUMMARY:Journey Arts' Table Sessions: Kristal Sotomayor
DESCRIPTION:Journey Arts’ beloved Table Sessions returns in April\, curated by award-winning filmmaker Kristal Sotomayor. Prime yourself for an ebullient evening with the boisterous sounds of the kumbia-klezmer-punk collective Mariposas Galácticas\, whose music is inspired by their Ancestor’s shared roots in “radical joy.” \nThen sit forward for a screening of Kristal’s short film Expanding Sanctuary  — the winner of the 2024 BlackStar Philadelphia Filmmaker Award — which flips the script on the current moment by telling the story of an immigrant mother’s triumphant fight for safety for Philly families. \nAnd\, of course\, leave filled not only with joy\, but with a delicious dinner by the James Beard Award-winning Chef Cristina Martínez of South Philly Barbacoa.
