Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. This landmark exhibition reimagines the story of American art\, featuring iconic paintings\, decorative arts\, and contemporary works from the 18th century to today. Through five themes — including Prosperity and Inequity\, Internationalism\, Western Expansion\, Landscapes and Horizons\, and Geometry and Modern Design — A Nation of Artists showcases how American artists have shaped and challenged our culture.\n\nThis exhibition is part of a collaboration with the Philadelphia Art Museum\, showcasing a simultaneous exhibition in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In this one\, it means you won everything. \nThe 4th Annual 2nd Place Race\, created by Ed Wagner of Clubedventures\, returns to Philadelphia on June 6. The event transforms Rittenhouse into a fast-moving\, slightly chaotic competition built around puzzles\, challenges\, games\, trading\, and a little bit of trickery\, all in pursuit of the coveted second-place finish. And the best part? No running required. \nThe adventure kicks off at the speakeasy pub above Plays & Players Theatre\, Quig’s! Teams of any size should plan to arrive at 5:00 p.m.\, where they’ll receive their first clues and instructions before heading out into the city. From there\, the race is on. \nParticipants will travel between neighborhood bars including Devil’s Alley and City Tap House Logan Square\, completing challenges\, solving puzzles\, and collecting points along the way. But it’s not just about racking up a high score. Teams can trade\, strategize\, and outmaneuver each other in real time\, all while keeping a close eye on the leaderboard. The goal is simple: land in second place. \nIt’s a perfect night out for friend groups\, coworkers\, theater lovers\, and anyone who enjoys a little strategy with their drinks.
