SUMMARY:Private Finance\, Public Power: A Free Talk on the History of Bank Supervision in America
DESCRIPTION:Banks may be private\, profit-driven institutions—but the public has always shaped the risks they take and paid the price when they fail.\nPrivate Finance\, Public Power explores this uneasy partnership over two centuries of American history\, from the wildcat banks of the early republic to the rise of federal deposit insurance and modern financial regulation. \nWharton professor Peter Conti-Brown and historian Sean Vanatta bring this story to life with colorful characters and surprising moments: rogues looting failed banks\, con artists posing as government examiners\, bribes paid in oyster dinners\, and reformers struggling to build order out of chaos. Through repeated crises and improvisation\, today’s complex banking oversight system emerged—flawed\, strained\, but largely functional. \nIn this talk\, Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown explores why this history matters for understanding the challenges facing U.S. banking today. \nThis event will be held in room 131/132 on the first floor of the Heim Center.

SUMMARY:Letters Between Us
DESCRIPTION:Subject: A Philly founder built a sold-out letter-writing experience — without running a single ad \nHi [Name]\, \nI’m Imani B.\, founder of Stamped\, a Philadelphia-based correspondence and community with national presence built around the belief that the those who shows up for everyone rarely have someone showing up for them. \nOn Sunday\, April 26\, I’m hosting Letters Between Us\, an intimate candlelit letter-writing experience for 35 women at Baby’s Kusina + Marketplace in Brewerytown. Guests are guided through reflective prompts to write a letter to their future self or a woman who shaped them\, closing the evening with a wax-seal ritual and live flute performance. The event sold out in 48 hours without a single paid promotion or ad. \nThe evening is supported by a curated group of Philadelphia and aligned brands including Federal Donuts\, Philadelphia Candle Co.\, Wallace Dry Goods\, Olfactory NYC Philadelphia\, and others\, all woven into the experience rather than displayed as traditional sponsorship. \nBut the story isn’t really the event. It’s this: in a city that moves fast and expects us to keep up\, a sold-out room of 30 women chose to slow down\, pick up a pen\, and write something true. And the only reason they knew to come was because someone they trusted told them about it. \nI’d love to make myself available for a pre-event conversation about what Stamped is building in Philadelphia. Hoping to connect. \nWarmly\,\nImani B.\nFounder\, Stamped\nExperiential Marketing Curator | Dot Connecter\nM:  347.746.2642 | E: info@imanib.co

SUMMARY:Victor Manibo in conversation with the Ghouls Next Door
DESCRIPTION:Why do we  see a rise in horror stories during more politically turbulent times? And how does it help us process true horrors in a safe way?\nSpeculative fiction author Victor Manibo will be joined by the hosts of the podcast Ghouls Next Door for a conversation about using the horror genre to explore injustices.\nHorror is on the rise in recent years in pop culture from award-winning novels to the 2026 Oscars sweep of horror genre film awards. Some of us are new to the genre\, and others are life long fans happy to see its resurgence. This will be an engaging conversation\, wherever you fall on that spectrum! \nVictor Manibo is a Filipino novelist living in New York. A 2022 Lambda Literary Emerging Voices Fellow\, he is the author of the science fiction novels The Sleepless and Escape Velocity and the crime novel Dead Note. His first horror novel\, The Villa\, Once Beloved (November 2025) is a gothic tale of family\, homecoming\, and postcolonial vengeance spanning from the United States to the Philippines. Across the genres\, his books share explorations of social justice themes\, ensemble casts of characters and are unapologetically queer\, \nGhouls Next Door is an award-winning podcast hosted by Gabe Castro and Kae Kushin that explores the societal\, historical and scientific influences behind our storytelling fears. Over nearly a decade they have produced dozens of episodes exploring everything from films to anime to novels. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, though space is limited in our cozy store. Copies of Manibo’s novels will be available for purchase to be signed by the author after the discussion. Ghouls Next Door merch will also be available for sale.
