SUMMARY:Old Academy Players presents Disenchanted!
DESCRIPTION:Disenchanted! By Dennis T. Giacino\nDirected by Annie Hnatko \nApril 25th\, 26th; May 2nd\, 3rd\, 4th\, 9th\, 10th\, 11th\, 2025\nFriday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.\, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. \nPoison apples and lost slippers are just the beginning. The original storybook heroines are none-too-happy with the way they’ve been portrayed in today’s pop culture\, so they’ve tossed their tiaras and have come to life to set the record straight. Forget the princesses you think you know — these royal renegades are here to comically belt out the truth. Received an “Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Outer Critics Circle Awards) and a “Best New Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Off-Broadway Alliance). \nContent Warning: Contains adult language and content.

SUMMARY:Space Melt Cinema presents: Small Soldiers at the Philadelphia Film Center!
DESCRIPTION:Greetings\, Gorgonites. Space Melt Cinema will be screening Small Soldiers (1998) in collaboration with the Philadelphia Film Socity April 11th at 7pm at the Film Society Center — 1412 Chestnut Street\, Philadelphia PA. \nSmall Soldiers is\, once again\, our favorite movie. It’s what happens when a children’s toy commercial slowly mutates into a war movie. Directed by Philadelphia College of Art alumni Joe Dante\, the film begins as a harmless suburban adventure and gradually reveals itself to be something much stranger: a satire about militarism\, consumer culture\, and what would happen if (and when) we put Pentagon-grade microchips into action figures. \nDante’s best joke is the casting. The Commando Elite are voiced by actors from The Dirty Dozen\, including Tommy Lee Jones\, while the peaceful Gorgonites are played by the trio from This Is Spinal Tap: Christopher Guest\, Michael McKean\, and Harry Shearer. The warmongers sound like old war movies. The monsters sound like a rock band. Of course\, let’s not forget the final performance from the legendary Phil Hartman. \nAs always\, thank you to the greatest artist in Philadelphia\, Noah J Landers (https://www.noahjlanders.com) for coming up with this incredible poster.

SUMMARY:The Philadelphia Chorus presents its Spring 2026 Concert “Reaching Home”
DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia Chorus Spring 2026 Concert “Reaching Home” \nA Concert Featuring: \nHoward Goodall- Eternal Light: A Requiem \nAndré Thomas- Mass: A Celebration of Love and Joy \nBob Chilcott- Nidaros Jazz Mass \n& others \nSaturday\, April 11\, 2026\, 4:00 PM \nPhiladelphia Episcopal Cathedral \n19 S. 38th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA \nTickets: $30; $25 Seniors & Advance Sales; $15 Students \nInformation: 215-995-3118; www.thephiladelphiachorus.org \nDONATIONS: www.thephiladelphiachorus.org/support \nOur concert\, “Reaching Home” will feature Emmy Award-winning British composer\, Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light: A Requiem. Centering on the experience of those left behind\, Goodall’s requiem offers a profound reflection on grief and comfort. Instead of focusing solely on the salvation of the deceased\, Eternal Light celebrates the solace found in music while acknowledging the painful reality of loss. This beautiful composition combines familiar liturgical text with poetry and hymns. \nThis concert will also feature André J. Thomas’ Mass: A Celebration of Love and Joy. This five-movement piece adheres to the traditional liturgical structure of the Mass while being reimagined through the lens of gospel rhythm and harmony. \nIn addition\, we will present Bob Chilcott’s Nidaros Jazz Mass.  This innovative mass seamlessly integrates ancient liturgical texts with contemporary jazz. The composition transitions effortlessly from contemplative ballads to vibrant\, blues-infused\, and high-energy movements.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Beekeeping Before 1719
DESCRIPTION:Keeping bees (apiculture) was new to North America in the 1600s\, brought to the north-east by English and German colonists to produce honey and wax. The earliest record of apiculture in Pennsylvania explains how German settlers in Germantown kept honeybees\, cultivated honey and wax\, and celebrated bees with poems and stories. \nJoin historian Miranda Mote for a lecture that tells a story of beekeeping in Germantown before 1719. \nMiranda Mote\, PhD is a historian\, artist\, and educator based in Philadelphia and the 2023-24 Garden Club of America / Prince Charitable Trusts Rome Prize\, Landscape Architecture Fellow. She teaches history and design\, works with children in K-12 schools and public venues\, designs teaching games for children\, and is currently writing an arts focused literacy and botany curriculum of lessons designed especially for children that live in urban environments. She established Botanography in 2022 as a non-profit to directly serve students and families in Philadelphia County and believes that every school should have a garden classroom where students can connect with plants every day. \nThis program can be attended in the Skyline Room on Parkway Central’s Fourth Floor. No registration required. Join us earlier in the afternoon for a bee inspired children’s activity for children first grade and up. Learn more here.

SUMMARY:Authors Tracey Levine & Grady Chambers in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Philly-based writers Tracey Levine (“At the Diner in Heaven”) and Grady Chambers (“Great Disasters”) for a reading & discussion. \nAbout the Event: \nJoin us on Tuesday\, April 7 at 7 PM where authors Tracey Levine and Grady Chambers will read from their work and discuss their craft. Tracey and Grady’s books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nRegistration on Eventbrite is highly recommended! Tickets are free or pay-what-you-want. \nQuestions? Email events@theheadandthehand.com. \nAbout the Books: \nAt The Diner in Heaven\, they’re serving up Bubbie’s chicken soup\, cigs\, abandoned malls\, roller skates\, Tastycakes\, 7-11s\, exes\, homemade bullets\, and the feeling of constantly being angled by boys\, some of them pretending to be men. Levine’s crisp\, intimate prose is—much like an Edward Hopper painting—saturated with loneliness and suggestion. These stories feel like sharing fries with a friend at midnight\, leaning in for the whispered secret that will change you both. – Annie Liontas\, Sex With a Brain Injury \n______________ \nIn the early 2000s in Chicago\, six young men start high school. Though they’ve been friends since boyhood\, their high school years set them on new paths: The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan begin\, along with the protests against them; Ryan falls in love but struggles to hold onto it; and he and the others learn to lose themselves in alcohol. With each passing year―as they enter college or the military\, then the world beyond; form new relationships with partners and children; and navigate shifting loyalties to a changing country―the narrator feels the group breaking further apart and finds himself asking: What does it mean to move forward\, both with and without one another? \nExploring the beauty\, hope\, and humor that can be found even in moments of deep loneliness and devastation\, Grady Chambers’ Great Disasters moves between memories of high school and early adulthood to consider friendship\, first love\, patriotism\, protest\, addiction\, and more. An exquisitely written\, profoundly moving debut novel\, Great Disasters is an intimate portrait of disasters big and small\, personal and political―and the ways the two are intertwined―and the announcement of a stunning new voice in American fiction. \nAbout the Authors: \nTracey Levine grew up in northeast Philadelphia and teaches creative writing and film courses at Arcadia University in Glenside\, PA where she coordinates the creative writing program for undergraduates.
