SUMMARY:Friday at Six Concert Series: Mel Hsu
DESCRIPTION:The Swarthmore College Department of Music presents Friday at Six\, a new concert series curated and hosted by composition and music technology professor Quinn Collins. Part performance\, part interview\, the series focuses on new music and the artists who bring it to life. \n  \nThe upcoming installment features composer and multi-instrumentalist Mel Hsu. A sonic painter of impossible worlds\, Mel often ventures from her classical roots as a cellist into unexpected\, cross-disciplinary collaborations. Mel composes and performs for film\, theater\, dance\, and poetry. Her work has appeared on WNYC\, at SXSW Film Festival\, Jacob’s Pillow\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, The New Museum\, Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, Asian American International Film Festival and BAM “Puppets on Film” Festival. She has had the honor of performing alongside Eminem\, Mac Miller and Ani DiFranco. Mel is a spreadsheet nerd\, a slow reader\, and a shameless instigator of kitchen dance parties. \n  \nFriday at Six: Mel Hsu will take place on Friday\, January 30th at 6pm in the Lang Concert Hall on the Swarthmore College campus. 99 Whittier Pl\, Swarthmore\, PA 19081. The program is expected to last one hour with a short reception to follow. Free and open to the public\, no reservation required. \n  \nEvent Page \n  \nwww.melhsu.com

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Happiness Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Happiness Workshop\,” a look at what recent research and centuries of wisdom tell us about bringing more joy and contentment to our lives\, with Eric Zillmer\, professor of psychology and the director of the Happiness Lab at Drexel University. \nAre you happy? If not\, how do you get there? \nGain insights into happiness with Eric Zillmer\, an award-winning teacher who leads a creative think tank that investigates the ingredients for happiness among individual people and communities. \nYou’ll learn how the study of happiness is a growing\, evidence-based field known as positive psychology\, which aims to find solutions to happiness challenges that can bring positive change to our lives and environments. \nDr. Zillmer will discuss the meaning of happiness and its place in our lives and society. He’ll draw from recent science and great thinkers in discussing how we can increase our own happiness and well-being\, throwing out a few practical tips as well. \nHe’ll talk about whether happiness can be measured and where in our brain happiness is located. We’ll look at the influence of socializing and social media on our happiness and about the roles that music\, humor\, adversity\, and regret have in happiness research. \nDr. Zillmer will discuss what we learn about happiness from competitive sports\, and he’ll suggest ten actions that you can engage in that will make you happier. \nAmong the questions he’ll tackle: What is the happiest day of the week? Can a specific place make you happy? What can we learn about happiness from travelling the world? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: Happiness in the face of a Tibetan Buddhist monk. (Photo by Wonderlane / Wikimedia Commons.)

SUMMARY:Inheritors
DESCRIPTION:Midwest Morton College\, founded with tremendous idealism\, finds itself on the eve of its 40th anniversary facing pressure from the state government to quell protests from faculty and students. Madeline\, the founder’s granddaughter and a student at Morton\, must decide what she is willing to risk to do what she believes is right. \nBest known for her one-act Trifles\, Susan Glaspell gives us a play from 1921 that makes our times seem a little less unprecedented.

This time we are teaming up with best selling author Jo Piazza (Everyone is Lying to You\, The Sicilian Inheritance) and her pop-up book shop Bookcase Books to bring you the book fair nostalgia of your childhood! Bring a gently used book to swap\, grab a brew and shop new books and merch from Bookcase Books! This event is 21+. \nWe will also be supporting the non-profit Books Through Bars with book donations. Please visit https://www.booksthroughbars.org/donate-books and consider bringing a book from their current book needs list. \nTwo sessions offered:  1-2:30pm and 2:30-4pm. \nHere’s how the swap works: \n*Bring a book or books (up to 10 per person). \n*We cannot take reference books\, textbooks\, travel guides or books that are dirty\, damaged\, excessively yellowed\, written in etc. Please consider bringing a recent/relevant book that you have enjoyed rather than an old unwanted item.  Think about the kind of books you would like to receive! \n*Check in with the host \n*Lay your books out on the designated tables \n*Browse the books and grab up to four new (to you) books to take home \n*Grab a drink\, mingle and have fun! \n*We will also have Blind Date With a Book books for sale. SUMMARY:Variety Pack
DESCRIPTION:After its debut in 2025\, VARIETY PACK is back and leveling up. Philadelphia’s festival dedicated to the chaotic\, theatrical\, unclassifiable corners of alt-comedy returns January 22 – 31\, 2026 with two weekends of shows\, twenty acts\, and even more gloriously unhinged performances.\nWhat started as a one-time experiment has now officially become its own producing entity: Variety Pack\, an independent festival committed to giving Philly’s strangest comedic minds a home… \n7:00 PM\, My Favorite Broadway: The Lost Tapes\nBased on audience suggestions\, Chris Newcomer and Alanna Shaffer will perform classic songs from bygone musicals you’ve never heard of because they don’t actually exist. Along with Michael Raab as musical director come see this improvised confection made for people who wish there were even more classic musicals in the canon!\n8:30 PM\, R. Eric Thomas: What’s New With You? (An Hour of Gossip)\nSmall talk\, big secrets\, gossip\, unsolicited opinions\, lab work\, take home quizzes\, trust falls\, game show\, storytelling\, comedy\, under one hour. New material from R. Eric Thomas\, world’s oldest millennial.\n10:00 PM\, She Was a Conquistawhore\nLegend has it The Conquistawhore pounds whiskey and brawls her vagina\, on account he makes terrible decisions. The two wander the Wild West (or is that the Main Line?) weaving a story of manifest destiny – a calling to take the land back one cis-white man at a time. An absurdly radical exploration of intergenerational trauma and healing where even pussies can become cowboys. Come to laugh and/or cry – stay for the horses and live music.
